The seeds take a while to sprout and the germination rate isn't great, but once they've grown well, the lettuce is superb and very tasty. It also regrows very well; I'm looking forward to my second harvest.

Description

Salad Bowl lettuce, a ready-to-cut lettuce. This lettuce is not a head lettuce: it does not form a head. It consists of fresh green leaves and lasts a long time. The leaves should be cut above the collar and new leaves will quickly regrow. Recommended by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, it has received the RHS Award of Merit. It is a source of beta-carotene and vitamin A. Sow the seeds in a rich and moist soil. The sowing should be done continuously, so sow little but often. Sow outdoors from March to July every two weeks.

Planting and care

Sow in well-raked and improved soil, from March to July, in a sunny location. Place a few seeds every 25 cm (10in). Cover the sowing with about 1 cm of soil and lightly press down. The seedlings will appear after one to two weeks. The first harvest will consist of the shoots removed during thinning, leaving only one plant every 25 cm (10in). Water regularly with a fine rain. You can start harvesting the leaves after 8 to 12 weeks.
