Description

The Delphinium or Blue Gentian Larkspur offers airy and elegant spikes throughout the summer, adorned with flowers of a unique, fresh, clear, almost electric blue, indispensable in the garden. It is also distinguished by its habit, a ramified tuft covered with delicate, tender green foliage. One can easily imagine its bunches of gentian blue in magnificent bouquets, sparkling borders, and sumptuous planters. Easy to grow, this annual can be directly sown in open ground to quickly and easily enhance flower beds or borders, in sunny, rich, and moist soil.

The Blue Gentian Delphinium, or Chinese Delphinium, is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding D. grandiflorum, native to mountainous regions of China, Siberia, Mongolia, and Japan. It is theoretically a perennial plant but is most often cultivated as an annual. It is hardy and shows rapid growth, forming a dense tuft, 34 to 40 cm (13.4 - 15.7 in) wide, with finely dissected, tender green palmate foliage, from which numerous flowering stems of 60 cm (23.6 in) in height emerge in summer. The flowering takes place from June to September and is highly visited by pollinating insects. The flowers are single, cup-shaped, gathered on tall erect spikes, and display five petals of a blue color that can be seen from afar. The plant develops from a woody rootstock that sinks vertically into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphinium always gives volume, verticality, and a lot of charm to perennial plant fields. The 'Blue Gentian' selection allows for quickly creating an elegant and rustic decor by directly sowing it in open ground. Its intense blue color is precious, enlarging the space and highlighting small areas. Paired with white, its shade is gentle; a combination with yellow or orange is more dynamic. Delphiniums are also good companions for moss or gallica roses, with which they create charming and romantic scenes.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of the Blue Gentian Delphinium directly outdoors, from April to May, in full sun, on a fertile, light, well-drained soil, previously well loosened. Bury the fine seeds to a depth of 6mm (0.2 in) in small holes spaced 30cm (11.8 in) apart. Keep the soil moist by watering regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin out by planting only one plant every 15 cm (5.9 in). For earlier flowering, sow Delphinium seeds from August to October in 7.5 cm (2.8 in) pots with good quality compost kept moist. Place the pots in a mini-greenhouse or inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 15-20 °C (59-68 °F) until germination. Once the seedlings have developed, place them in a bright but cooler location. Overwinter the plants in a cool, bright place, protected from frost, by watering them sparingly. Transplant them to their final location in the following spring. Water regularly until the plants are fully established. Bury sturdy stakes among the tall plants by 10 cm (3.9 in), which will allow them to rise while being supported. You can also stake the plants with bamboo canes. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage flowering renewal. Delphiniums appreciate sunny locations, protected from the wind, as well as fertile soil, rich in organic matter and well-drained.
