Description
The Cordyline australis Purpurea Group includes the purple-leaved forms of the cabbage tree, a small evergreen tree with a palm-like appearance, native to New Zealand. These seeds will produce several different specimens, each with its own shade of bronze or purple. It takes a few years to obtain a fine clump and often 7 to 10 years before a true trunk begins to form, but the result is sturdy, long-lived and well-rooted plants. In coastal areas or regions with a mild climate, this cordyline provides lasting structure in borders and on terraces.
Botanically, Cordyline australis belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is commonly known as the cabbage tree or cabbage palm. Botanical synonyms include Dracaenopsis australis, Cordyline superbiens and Cordyline sturmii.
The Purpurea Group brings together forms with naturally purple leaves, close to the old cultivar 'Purpurea'. They differ from the green type by their brown-purple to violet-purple foliage, slightly less vigorous growth and slightly lower hardiness, down to –6 / –7 °C in very well-drained soil. Young plants first form a dense rosette of strap-shaped leaves, then an erect trunk that branches after the first flowerings. In mild climates, a well-established specimen commonly reaches 4 to 5m in height with a 1.75m spread.
You can expect a clump of about 1m in 3 to 4 years of sowing, with the tree-like silhouette developing over about ten years. The sword-shaped leaves measure 40 to 90cm long and 3 to 7cm wide; they are leathery, clustered in tufts at the tips of the branches, at first erect then slightly trailing with age. Flowering occurs on mature specimens, in late spring or summer: large, 60 to 100cm long panicles bear a multitude of small creamy-white flowers which are highly fragrant and rich in nectar, attracting bees and other insects.
In the garden, use Cordyline australis Purpurea Group as a focal point near a terrace, as a specimen on a lawn or at the heart of an exotic-inspired border. Outside the mildest regions, it should be grown in a large container and brought out into the garden from late spring to autumn. You can pair it with Phormium 'Rainbow Queen', variegated with bronze and pink, Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief', with its red plumes in autumn, Pennisetum massaicum 'Red Button', with its purple spikes, or Carex testacea 'Prairie Fire', with its coppery leaves.

Planting and care
Start by soaking the seeds of Cordyline australis Purpurea Group in warm water for 24 hours to encourage germination. Then, plant them in a light, well-drained potting compost mixed with sand to improve aeration. Sow at a depth of about 2cm and maintain a steady temperature between 20 and 25°C. The seeds may take several weeks to germinate. Keep the substrate slightly moist, without excess water to avoid rotting.
Cultivation:
When planting in open ground, choose a position in full sun and in well-drained soil, ideally sandy. Cordyline australis appreciates moist, well-drained soils. Once planted, water regularly for the first year, then only during prolonged dry spells. It is advisable to add a mulch of gravel around the base to improve drainage and prevent stagnant moisture. In cold climates, winter protection (mulching or fleece) may be necessary.
In a pot, use a wide, deep, and heavy container (with drainage holes in the bottom) to stabilise the plant. A draining substrate, made of potting compost mixed with coarse sand or gravel, is recommended. Place the pot in a very bright spot, ideally in full sun. Water by allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings, and reduce watering in winter. You may feed once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser, but this is not essential.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
