Description

This Boliviensis hybrid Begonia is a vigorous and very floriferous variety, initially upright in habit and then trailing, ideal for window boxes and hanging baskets. It quickly forms a dense cascade of elongated green foliage and numerous flowers in bright orange, with single and elongated corollas. Low-maintenance and not demanding, it blooms for a very long period in both sun and shade.

The 'Summerwings Orange' Begonia is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the begonia family. This variety is part of a series of hybrids selected for their fast growth, floriferousness, ramified and trailing habit, as well as their great resistance and ease of cultivation. 'Summerwings Orange' will quickly reach a height of 30 cm (12in) and a diameter of 50 cm (20in), and can cascade up to 60-70 cm (24-28in). Appearing in June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are single, elongated, composed of wing-shaped petals, in a bright and shiny orange color. They are gathered in clusters and bloom among elegant elongated leaves. The plant tolerates partial shade and sun, as well as rainy and cool summers, as well as heatwaves, which do not prevent it from flowering.

Begonia is ideal for full sun, but can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in containers, window boxes, or hanging baskets. The Summerwings Begonias go well with Impatiens and lobelias. Begonias are also comfortable in well-maintained flowerbeds, alongside lighter flowers, or grown in pots on the patio. Finally, it is good to know that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before installing them outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Begonia Summerwings Orange blooms from June until the first frost. It is placed in well-drained, fertile, moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it does not tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilization for intense flowering. Begonia Summerwings may be subject to powdery mildew. Begonias are frost-tender plants, so they do not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, they are often grown in containers that can be easily brought indoors to heated greenhouses or under a conservatory at the first sign of frost. If planted in the ground, it is time to remove them and store them indoors until the following spring.
