Description

Petunia Lavender Sky is a gently original variety of a new lineage of hybrids with flowers speckled with white spots. In this flower, they are veined with violet and discreetly sprinkled with white spots on a soft mauve background. the large, funnel-shaped corollas are all different and bloom generously from summer until the frost on a vigorous plant with a semi-trailing habit. A true jewel for hanging baskets!

Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or frost-sensitive perennial plants are mostly as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America.

Petunia Lavender Sky is part of a new series of hybrids that truly stand out from the rest. It quickly forms a beautiful dense and semi-trailing tuft, with long velvety stems that rise to 20-30 cm (8-12in) before cascading down to 50-60 cm (20-24in), or even more. The plant flowers from May-June to October, provided it is regularly supplied with water and fertiliser. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 7 cm (3in) in diameter and light purple with veins and throat in violet. The white spots are few and of various sizes. These spots appear more intensely when there are significant temperature differences between day and night. The corollas bloom on dense foliage. The medium green, hairy leaves are ovate and pointed with entire edges and vigorous and healthy. This variety shows good resistance to rain and sun and requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in the splendour and duration of their flowering, as evidenced by this sparkling Lavender Sky variety, a true horticultural achievement in terms of colours. Place it in large designer pots or hanging baskets, alone or alongside Petunia Night Sky. You can also plant it with other annual plants such as Lobelia, Sanvitalia, morning glories and Pelargonium peltatum, in harmony of colours or to create striking contrasts. Use its flowers to decorate a floral centrepiece, with small white or mauve roses: you will amaze your guests!

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
