Description

Clematis Have Fun (‘Zo23010’) is a variety of large-flowered clematis with captivating bicolour star-shaped corollas, purple enhanced by a magenta central stripe. Ideal for dressing trellises, obelisks, small wire fences or a large container on the terrace, this selection offers colourful summer flowering, moderate growth and decorative feathery seed heads. Easy to grow in a temperate climate, in a humus-bearing, well-drained soil, with its roots kept cool and its head in the morning sun.

Belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, this variety is a hybrid of the patens group selected and protected under the breeder's code 'Zo23010' by the J. van Zoest B.V. nursery (Wim Snoeijer) in the Netherlands. The botanical species Clematis patens, the origin of many large-flowered cultivars, is native to Japan and East Asia, spontaneous at woodland edges and in shrubby hedges.
'Have Fun' develops climbing stems, the twining petioles of its leaves serving as an attachment system; in the ground, it reaches 2 to 3 m in height with a spread of 1 to 1.50 m once established. In a container, it is limited to 1.50–2 m. Flowering extends from June to July in the form of 10-15 cm star-shaped flowers marked with a magenta central band on each purple tepal; the numerous stamens bear light to brown-reddish anthers. The flowers first open on the previous year's shoots, then on the young summer shoots. After flowering, it produces silky, silvery-grey seed heads, very decorative from October to November.
The foliage is deciduous. The root system is quite deep and fibrous: the plant likes to have its 'feet cool', it tolerates heatwaves poorly and dislikes repeated transplanting.

Plant your large-flowered clematis alongside your climbing roses to extend the flowering of your trellises and pergolas until the end of summer. The Have Fun variety pairs well with purple-leaved elders and white climbing roses. You can also pair it with a white large-flowered clematis like Miss Bateman, for example.
It is a genus rich in diversity, with varieties of all colours, all shapes, all sizes, for all climates.

Advice: Avoid excess fertiliser which stimulates foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch, to avoid significant humidity, which favours clematis wilt.

Planting and care

Plant your Clematis Have Fun in a spot with morning sun or partial shade, or even a north-facing position. Shade the base of your clematis with a groundcover plant, a hardy geranium, or even a tile, a log, or any material that will keep the base of the plant in shade without hindering air circulation. Clematis like to have their feet cool.
Plant your young plant by covering the root ball with 3 cm of soil, in a soil worked to a depth of 20 cm, lightened with good compost. For the first few weeks, water generously and regularly. Clematis attach themselves using their tendrils. To encourage their growth, provide them with a trellis support or let them climb the trunk of a tree by placing wire mesh. Clematis also enjoy growing freely over neighbouring plants. You can prune it in April down to a height of 100 cm. We advise against overwatering, as stagnant water can cause wilting, a fungal disease that develops at the base of clematis.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune in late winter (February-March): remove dead or damaged wood, then shorten each stem down to the first pair of well-formed large buds (usually 30–60 cm from the tips) to retain flowering on the old wood. After the first flowering (late June-July), remove faded flowers by cutting back to a pair of vigorous leaves to encourage a second flush. Every 3–4 years, a more severe cut back to 30–50 cm in late winter rejuvenates the plant, but it will flower later the following year.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Average
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
