Description

The Clematis 'Jenny' is a beautiful carefree climber, with a very fresh spring flowering and a repeat blooming in late summer. It offers an abundance of medium-sized flowers measuring 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The four blue-mauve sepals that make them up are marked with a whiter central area and surround a heart filled with numerous white-yellow filamentous stamens. Its moderate growth, ease of cultivation, and floribundity make this Swedish creation a charming little vine accessible to all gardeners. It is as beautiful in the ground as it is in a large pot on the terrace or balcony.

The genus Clematis belongs to the family of ranunculaceae. 'Jenny' is a horticultural variety obtained in Sweden in 1991, notably derived from the famous Clematis Jackmanii. It belongs to the clematis group that blooms in spring on last year's shoots, with a rebloom in late summer on this year's shoots. Its flower is delicate, produced abundantly in successive waves from late spring to the end of summer. The flowers are solitary or grouped in cymes. It is a woody perennial plant with climbing stems that cling to its support by means of petioles transformed into tendrils. It will reach a height of 2 to 3 m (7 to 10ft), with a spread of 1m². Its fairly dark green foliage, tinged with olive, is deciduous and composed of simple, palmate leaves with a smooth edge.

Plant your clematis alongside your climbing roses to extend the flowering of your walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a diverse genus, with flowers in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their ease of cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. The 'Jenny' variety, thanks to its ease of cultivation and excellent hardiness, will thrive in all gardens. It can be trained to climb in a hedge, on a trellis, or an arch, alone or in the company of the Clematis viticella 'Madame Julia Correvon' with its small reddish-purple flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Jenny' clematis preferably in the sun, in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, shading the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and wilt in overly wet soil.

Install your plant by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost. For the first few weeks, water regularly but be careful of stagnant water, as it can cause collar rot. Cover the base of climbing clematis with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of wilting while promoting vigorous shoots from the stump. After planting, prune the stems of deciduous climbing clematis to about 30 cm (12in) above a nice pair of buds. Mulch in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Train the stems, without squeezing them, until the plant can grip on its own. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.

This variety flowers on the previous year's growth, so lightly prune it in March (a simple clean-up is sufficient). After the spring flowering, cut back half of all the branches to encourage strong branching and the production of new shoots for a second flowering during the summer season. It is possible to prune the clematis down to 60 cm (24in) from the ground. Only prune severely to rejuvenate your clematis every 4 or 5 years. Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests.
