Description

Clematis Sugar Candy is a floriferous variety with moderate growth which blooms quite early, with large bicoloured flowers in two shades of pink that shine around a cluster of light yellow stamens. Its first flowering occurs in late spring, then the plant has a second, equally generous, flowering in late summer. Perfect for adorning trellises, small structures, or a spring-flowering shrub such as the Microphylla Superba Lilac for example.

Clematis Sugar Candy was obtained in England by Evison, one of the most talented clematis breeders. Belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, this large-flowered clematis likes light, deep, moist, fertile and preferably neutral soil. It appreciates a sunny or partially shaded position (its colours will be more intense), with its feet in the shade. It is resistant to cold and does not mind even a long period of frost. However, it does not like stagnant humidity, drought, or heat.

'Sugar Candy' is a reasonably sized climber that can reach up to 2.50 m (8ft), or even 3 m (10ft) high. The previous year's stems will bear the spring flowers from May to July. These flowers have 6 tepals and measure between 15 and 18 cm (6 and 7in) in diameter. The late summer flowering (carried by the current year's branches) begins in September and will continue into October. The single star-shaped flowers are sometimes a bit smaller but have the same charming colours. The tepals end in a point and often have a wavy margin. They are light and vivid mauve pink with a deeper pink median zone that enhances the whole. They open fully and reveal a refreshing light yellow stamen centre. After flowering, seed heads will decorate the foliage until winter. The medium-green, deciduous leaves are composed of 3 to 5 leaflets. The stems spontaneously cling to the support provided to them through petioles transformed into tendrils.

In a container, with a trellis for support, 'Sugar Candy' will be fantastic on a small balcony and flower for a long time even in partial shade. Place some spring bulbs at its feet and enjoy the show with minimal maintenance. To enhance this scene a bit more, 'Piliu' clematis, or Aloha rose, can harmoniously accompany it. It will be magnificent climbing a Sorbaria Sem. Finally, if you have a larger space, this non-invasive clematis will weave its way into a flowerbed on a bamboo teepee to bring height.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Sugar Candy' should be planted in spring or autumn, 5 cm (2in) deep with the root ball placed at an angle or even lying on the ground. The head should be in the sun (or partial shade) and the foot in the shade. You can place a flat tile in front of the crown or plant ground cover plants. It prefers relatively moist but not waterlogged, deep, well-worked, well-drained, rich soil. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to encourage the emergence of new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30 cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later on. Maintenance pruning should be done after flowering (in mid-summer) to remove faded flowers and shorten the stems that have bloomed. This will allow the plant to produce new shoots for a second flowering. More vigorous pruning can be done in spring to cut back some stems more severely, but not necessarily every year. Keep an eye out for pests, such as aphids and slugs and snails.
