Description
The clematis ‘The Bride’ is an old English heritage variety with very soft ivory-white flowers, highlighted by cream-yellow stamens. Initially somewhat cupped, the flowers flatten as they open and retain a more rounded than starry shape. Of medium size, they stand out from the more spectacular large-flowered white clematis. Its moderate growth is well suited to small gardens and container cultivation on a patio. It flowers mainly in early summer, then may produce new flowers on new shoots in late summer.
This woody, deciduous climbing plant belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Its foliage falls in autumn, but the brown stems remain alive in winter and bear some of the following year's flowers. 'The Bride' is classified among the early large-flowered clematis, a group that combines the old Patens and Fortunei groups. It was created in England by the Jackman nurseries, but the exact date is unknown. This heritage variety had disappeared from English and European catalogues in the early 1960s. Considered lost, it was rediscovered in New Zealand by nurseryman Alister Keay, who brought it back to England and enabled its reintroduction into cultivation.
Its stems reach 2 to 2.50 m and attach to supports by the petioles of their leaves, which are capable of twisting. These curl around thin twigs, wires, or the crossbars of a trellis. The leaves, usually composed of three cordate leaflets, are medium to dark green and have a fairly firm texture. The flowers appear from June to August, first on the previous year's stems, then on new shoots. They measure 7.5 to 10 cm in diameter and have six to eight broad, rounded, slightly overlapping sepals. The corolla is hollow at first opening before opening further. The ivory-white sepals surround a cluster of stamens with cream filaments and pale yellow anthers. Light pruning after the first flowering encourages the formation of new floriferous shoots. This clematis is hardy down to –29 °C.
On a trellis leaning against an east- or west-facing wall, the white flowering of clematis ‘The Bride’ is more visible among dark colours. It can also climb into the rose ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’, with its almost thornless stems and deep pink flowers. Nearby, you can plant the Hydrangea serrata ‘Blue Bird’ with its large flat white heads with a blue or pink centre. The heuchera ‘Obsidian’, with its almost black foliage, or the Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, with its silver leaves, will be decorative at the base of the other plants. In a container, a 1.50 m obelisk allows its stems to be spread without crowding them.

Planting and care
Plant the clematis 'The Bride' from March to May or from September to October, in partial shade or morning sun. Avoid south-facing walls in hot regions and windy locations. Plant it in deep, fertile, humus-bearing, moist, and well-drained soil. It tolerates clay if water does not stagnate in winter, as well as slightly chalky soils; it also accepts acidic soil. Loosen the soil generously and add well-rotted compost. Tilt the root ball towards the support and bury its base by 5 to 8 cm. Water regularly during the first two years and mulch the soil to limit drying out. Tie in the new stems before they become tangled. In a container, choose a pot at least 45 cm deep and wide, filled with a fertile, well-draining substrate.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
