Planted this spring. Received with 1 stem that grew, 2 broken stems with 4 leaves that didn't regrow. Contrary to what is written in the description, the (beautiful) flowering took place throughout the month of June and the last 2 flowers on the stem are currently open. No more buds for this summer... Unless there is a second growth, but I doubt it.

A very beautiful hybrid variety, with upright bell-shaped flowers, resembling small tulips of a magnificent bright red rose, appearing abundantly in late summer. This small clematis, measuring 1 m (3ft) to 1.50 m (5ft) in all directions, regrows each year from the base, like an herbaceous perennial. It can be allowed to crawl and wrap around low bushes, with simultaneous or staggered flowering. Cultivate in ordinary but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.

Description

The Clematis x texensis 'Princess Diana' is a hybrid of the Texas clematis that stands out with its upright flowers resembling small tulips. Their very vibrant colour, an intense pink leaning towards red, pairs perfectly with all end-of-summer and autumn colours. They appear abundantly in the second part of summer, on a small vine that grows like an herbaceous perennial and will not exceed 2m (7ft) in a year. It can crawl and wrap itself around low bushes, with simultaneous or staggered flowering. It can be grown in ordinary but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. Vigorous when planted in the ground, it also adapts very well to container cultivation.

The 'Princess Diana' clematis was obtained by crossing the Clematis texensis, a botanic species endemic to Texas, and the 'Bee's Jubilee' clematis. It belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. It is a small herbaceous vine with a perennial stump, whose growth occurs in spring and disappears with the first cold weather. Its growth generally reaches 1.50m (5ft) in all directions. Flowering occurs from late July to September-October, depending on the regions. A sunny exposure in northern regions is essential to obtain numerous flowers, while partial shade is preferred in our warmer regions. Its flowers form on the current year's stems. They have the shape of upright tulips with 4 petals fused at the base, and measure 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The petals, quite thick, have a slightly waxy texture. Their colour is a pure and vibrant pink-red. After flowering, feathery and silvery fruits form. The foliage is composed of fairly dark green, ovate and pointed leaves, carried by petioles that curl around any support available, allowing the plant to firmly cling. All vegetation disappears in winter as it decomposes. This clematis is a robust and sturdy plant that tolerates dry soils in summer quite well.

Plant your clematis alongside your climbing roses to extend the flowering of your walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a genus rich in diversity, with flowers of all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. 'Princess Diana', being of moderate size, pairs well with shrubs such as hydrangeas, Caryopteris, and Perovskia, as well as with vines with staggered flowering like jasmine and alpine clematis, or simultaneous ones like viticella clematis. It will also thrive in a pot on a balcony or next to an entrance to welcome visitors with its generous and original flowering.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Princess Diana' clematis preferably in the full sun in less sunny regions, but in partial shade in hot and very sunny regions. Install it in a rather fertile, well-drained soil, shading the roots and the base of the stem (with a flat tile for example). Herbaceous species prefer full sun and wilt in overly wet soil. Install your plant by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost. During the first few weeks, water regularly but be careful of stagnant water, as it can cause collar rot. Mulch in February with garden compost or well-decomposed manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Train the stems, without squeezing them, until the plant grips on its own. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighboring plants. This variety produces only herbaceous stems that dry out in winter, so you can simply clean it by removing the dried vegetation in spring. You can also prune all these dead stems at the end of winter.
