More information

This variety is distinguished by its large, 12 to 15 cm diameter flowers, with very rounded sepals and slightly wavy edges, overlapping each other nicely. The flower colour graduates from light pink to darker middles with a heart of yellow-green stamens in harmony with the light, apple-green foliage. This medium-sized climbing plant is ideal when combined with a bush or a rosebush that it will cover with flowers when it is no longer blooming. Otherwise, let it climb on a support such as a trellis or a pergola.

Description

The 'Pink Celebration' clematis stands out with its large flowers of the tenderest light pink, enhanced by green-yellow stamens that harmonize well with its apple-green foliage. This medium size climbing plant is ideal in association with a bush or a rose to fill it with flowers when they are no longer in bloom. You can also train it to climb on a support such as a trellis or pergola. Keep its base cool, in the shade of another plant, and its head in the light.

'Pink Celebration' is a hybrid variety. The clematis is a climbing plant that belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. This clematis, like most of its cousins, likes light, deep, moist, fertile soil, preferably neutral. It appreciates a sunny or partially shaded exposure, with its base always in the shade. It is hardy, withstands cold and does not mind even severe frost. However, it does not like stagnant moisture, so the substrate must be well-draining and watering should be moderate (if necessary during the first year). It is suitable for growing in a large container (minimum 60 cm in diameter).

Clematis 'Pink Celebration' can reach up to 3 m high and 1.5 m wide. It is a Group 2 clematis, meaning it has large flowers and blooms in spring, with a second flowering in late summer or autumn. The woody stems from the previous year bear the spring flowers, sometimes double, while the herbaceous branches from the current year bear the second late summer flowering. The 12 to 15 cm diameter flowers normally consist of 6 to 8 large tepals and have a large, well-filled heart of bristly stamens. Later on, they transform into dry seed heads with evergreen feathery fronds in winter, providing a notable decorative feature in the late season. The deciduous, dark green leaves are composed of 3 to 5 leaflets. They are carried by twisting petioles that twine around their support.

Plant spring bulbs and a few ground cover perennials such as white or blue-flowered geraniums at the base of this 'Pink Celebration' clematis and enjoy the show with minimal maintenance! If you have a larger space, this clematis will weave its way through shrubs or bring height to a pastel-coloured border. Large-flowered repeat-flowering clematis are also the best companions for your climbing roses. This 'Pink Celebration' variety will perfectly complement blue, violet, and pink borders and bring light to shady areas. Associate it with other climbing plants with denser foliage and complementary flowering such as akebias or climbing honeysuckles.

Planting and care

The 'Pink Celebration' Clematis is best planted in spring or autumn at a depth of 5 cm, with the root ball placed diagonally or even lying on the ground. The head in the sun (or partial shade) and the foot in the shade. You can place a flat tile in front of the base or plant ground cover plants. It appreciates soils which are rather moist without being waterlogged, deep, well-worked, well-drained, and rich. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30 cm from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. Maintenance pruning should then be done after flowering (in mid-summer) to remove faded flowers and shorten the stems that have bloomed. This will allow the plant to produce new shoots for a second flowering. More vigorous pruning can be done in spring to cut back some stems more severely, but not necessarily every year.
