Planting and care

Plant this duo in spring or autumn, in a bright position, in non-scorching sun or partial shade in warm regions. The May berry ‘Eisbär’ should guide the choice of location: it requires deep, humus-rich soil, cool in summer and non-calcareous. The goji Sweet Lifeberry, more tolerant, accepts ordinary garden soil, even slightly calcareous, if it remains well-drained. In calcareous, dry or shallow soil, plant the May berry in a large container filled with a rich, fresh and non-calcareous mix, and plant the goji in open ground nearby. Leave about 1.50 m between the two shrubs, water regularly for the first year, then mulch the base of the honeyberry to maintain coolness.

Care

Pruning instructions In March, especially prune the goji, removing dead wood, weak or poorly placed branches, then slightly shortening any overly long stems if necessary. The 'Eisbär' May berry flowers very early in spring, so avoid pruning it at this time, except to remove dead wood. Wait until the end of the harvest to lightly thin out its branches if it becomes too dense.
