Description

The Delice de framboise 'Rusilva' raspberry from Organic Agriculture is a recently bred non-perpetual variety that produces large, round, highly fragrant dark red fruits. It is a vigorous, productive, and early variety, with raspberries ready for harvest from mid-June onwards. Planting should be done from October to March in well-prepared and enriched garden soil that remains moist in summer.

To fully enjoy their flavour, raspberries should be consumed soon after picking, as they do not keep well. If you have a plentiful harvest, consider making coulis, sorbets, pies, or jams. You can also freeze them.

Production reaches its normal level in the third year after planting. A plant can produce fruit for around 10 years. There are two types of varieties: perpetual, which produce in autumn (generally from August to October) and then again in June the following year, and non-perpetual varieties, which have a plentiful harvest around June-July.

The Raspberry is a deciduous shrub with upright stems, forming a bush about 1.50 m (5ft) in all directions over time. The canes are biennial, with each one dying after fruiting. Every year, new, prickly suckers emerge from the roots. The Raspberry leaves are green on top, white-green and downy on the underside. The flowering is very attractive to bees. The small white flowers (1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) in diameter) are grouped in small clusters of 10 to 12 in April-May. The fruits are made up of small agglomerated drupes, easy to detach when ripe.

The Raspberry belongs to the Rosaceae family, along with strawberries, blackberries, and wild roses. The wild raspberry is native to Europe and temperate Asia, where it grows in cool climates alongside elderberry, beech, or mountain ash, especially in mountainous undergrowth but also in plains.

Planting and care

The Organic Delice de framboise Raspberry prefers humus-rich soils that retain moisture, even in summer, without too much limestone. It enjoys partially shaded but bright exposures. In northern regions, it will tolerate full sun, while in the south, it prefers partial shade. Plant it from October to March in ordinary soil enriched with compost and well-decomposed manure.

Space the plants every 80 cm (32in) in rows that are 1.50 m (5ft) apart. During planting, the collar should be level with the ground. It is recommended to train them with wire stretched between stakes or on a trellis.

Regular watering is necessary to promote root development in the first year of planting. During periods of high heat or prolonged drought, provide additional water. Weed the surface, especially at the beginning of planting, and apply mulch to retain moisture in summer.

Raspberry plants can be susceptible to various diseases if the growing conditions are not optimal (raspberry anthracnose, raspberry rust, powdery mildew, grey mould during rainy periods, or Botrytis). The damage observed in cultivation is normally due to unfavourable weather conditions, especially during cold springs that allow micro-fungi present in the soil to infest the vegetation. To protect the plants, fertilise raspberries with organic fertilisers that promote the multiplication of anaerobic bacteria in the soil, which strengthens the soil's ability to stimulate the plant's immune system. Raspberries can also be attacked by certain pests such as raspberry worms, the larvae of a small beetle that lodges in the fruits, without causing significant damage.

Raspberries easily propagate through suckers that grow near the base: remove them and replant them in another area of the garden if desired.

Care

Pruning instructions Raspberry bushes must be pruned for proper fruiting. Pruning varies depending on the type, whether they are perpetual or non-perpetual. Non-perpetual Raspberry bushes bear fruit in early summer on the previous year's canes. After harvest, cut the canes that have borne fruit down to the ground. In winter, keep 10 to 12 shoots per metre, trim the ends, and cut the rest of the canes down to the ground. Perpetual Raspberry bushes bear fruit for the first time in late summer and autumn on new shoots, and then a second time in early summer on the same canes. In August, cut the canes that have borne fruit down to the ground, and then in winter, prune the ends of the canes that fruited in autumn. Remove dead wood and weak or diseased canes.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time August, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
