Description

The Jonagold Apple is a hardy, vigorous, and highly productive variety. It produces fruits with a diameter of 7.5 to 8 cm (3in), with a light green to yellow skin striped with red. Their yellow flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic. Harvest takes place in October, and the fruits can be stored in a cool place until January. The Jonagold Apple is not self-fertile. It is not suitable for hot regions and oceanic climates.

The Jonagold Apple is a variety selected in 1953 at Cornell University in Geneva, USA. It is the result of a cross-breeding between Golden Delicious and Jonathan. It has been commercially available since 1968.

The Jonagold Apple is a semi-erect tree, giving it a slender and elegant appearance. It is highly productive, and thinning is essential at the start of fruiting to prevent small fruit size and the occurrence of diseases.
Its foliage consists of large, ovate, slightly fuzzy leaves that are dark green on top and whitish-green underneath, with deeply dentate margins.
The white-pink flowering occurs in mid-April. The flowering is not susceptible to frost. Therefore, the apple tree is suitable for cultivation in all regions. Self-sterile, the presence of apple trees with flowering at the same time is necessary. The varieties 'Starking Delicious', 'Melrose', 'Reine des Reinettes', and 'Ingrid Marie' are the most suitable.
Fruiting is early, starting in September, and the fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) until January. The fruits, with a diameter of 7.5 to 8 cm (3in), have a light green to yellow skin striped with red. Their yellow flesh is crisp, juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic.

These apples are particularly good for eating fresh or in pastries. They can also be used in compotes, cooked dishes, jams, jellies, and in savory dishes, paired with Normandy cheeses, for example.

Planting and care

Choose a well-sunlit location for your Jonagold Apple Tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but not excessively so. Dig a large planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost) and a base fertilizer such as crushed horn. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water generously, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside the frost period. Container-grown plants can be planted year-round, except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, this will improve fruiting. Watch out for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep picked fruits for storage. Apples should be stored with the stem down, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry, cool location, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple thinning of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time March to April
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
