The apple tree ordered showed no signs of life by the end of May, even though it was planted during a theoretically suitable period, watered and adequately lit. It was injured at the base, perhaps during transport? Make sure to thoroughly check before accepting the delivery...

Description

The Reinette Grise du Canada Apple is an old variety that is very vigorous and resistant to diseases, adapting well to many regions. It has very good fertility, although the tree is somewhat susceptible to alternate bearing. From September, it produces large, firm, flattened and irregular fruits. The colour and appearance of the skin are unusual taking on beautiful cinnamon tones and becoming slightly rough when ripe. Its flesh is white, fine, melting, juicy, and deliciously flavoured, balanced between sweet and tart. It can be stored until March, but the flesh becomes more floury over time. It is a perfect apple for cooking and baking.

The "Reinette" Apple family includes more than 50 varieties. Reinette Grise du Canada was first described in 1805 by Clavé. There is no precise information about its origin. When mature, the tree reaches about 6m (20ft) high and has a spread of 4 to 5m (13 to 16ft).

The Canada Reinette Apple is a strongly vigorous tree with sturdy wood and a semi-erect habit. Its crown opens up with the fruit load, allowing for necessary ventilation to prevent disease development. It has low susceptibility to scab. Over time, it tends to take on a slightly weeping form.
Its foliage consists of very large, ovate, slightly hairy leaves that are dark green on top and whitish-green underneath, with deeply toothed margins.
It flowers in April, at the same time as Granny Smith, Queen of the Pippins, Idared and Golden Delicious, which are excellent pollinators. Although self-fertile, the Reinette Grise du Canada apple will have a better fruit set if other apple trees are present.
The apples ripen from September. It is recommended to harvest them at this time and consume them from December to March. The large, flattened fruits have a cinnamon hue when ripe.

Reinette Grise du Canada apples are excellent for cooking, but they are also delicious when eaten raw. They can be used to make compotes, jams, pies, fritters and cakes, or served as a side dish with savoury dishes...

Planting and care

Choose a sunny spot for your Organic Reinette Grise du Canada apple tree. The soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but without excess. Dig a wide planting hole, at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (potting soil, compost...) and a base fertiliser like bonemeal. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary and water abundantly, even in winter and even if it rains. Fruit trees are best planted between October and March, outside of the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted year-round except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, to improve fruiting. Watch out for potential aphid attacks during the season. A white felting caused by a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only keep picked fruits. Store apples with the stalk downwards, on shelves or in crates. Choose a completely dark, dry and cool place, frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple thinning of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet shape, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In either case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
