More information

This self-fertile, rather early variety is resistant to peach leaf curl and peach diseases. It produces large fruits weighing up to 200 g, with a velvety pink-red skin containing a tasty, sweet, slightly acidic white flesh, planting, preferably in autumn, for a harvest in August from the second or third year of cultivation. Its spring flowering is charming and pink.

Description

The Peach or Prunus persica 'Benedicte' is known for its natural resistance to diseases, especially peach leaf curl, and its large fruits with delicious white flesh. It is, therefore, a peach tree that requires no treatment and is well suited to organic cultivation. The fruits ripen in August, more or less early, depending on the region, and can weigh up to 200 grams. They are covered with a beautiful skin that turns pink-red in the sun. Soft, juicy, and fragrant, the flesh is sweet and slightly acidic. Fruit trees are preferably planted in autumn. The bonus of this variety is its charming pink flowering in March-April.

The peach tree's species name, "persica," was given to it because it was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms are native to northern China. Its appearance in Europe occurred in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century.

Like many fruit trees, the 'Benedicte' Peach tree appreciates loose, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils, especially clayey ones. It is a tree of excellent vigour. It will remain of moderate size, rarely exceeding 4 metres (13 feet) in height. Depending on the region, its flowering occurs from late March to mid-Aprin. It is abundant and appears before the young leaves develop on the branches. Being self-fertile, this peach tree does not need the presence of another variety to bear fruit. The deciduous foliage turns yellow in autumn before falling. It is bright green and has a slight almond scent.

This 'Benedicte' variety was selected in the Bouches du Rhône region. The tree is hardy down to -20°C (-4°F), but its relatively early flowering may be damaged by late frosts in cooler climates. It should be planted in a sunny location protected from cold winds. Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweetened, salted, flambéed, frozen, or in sauces. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in many recipes, including jams, compotes, and pastries. Surrounded by some spring-flowering bulbs, the peach tree will announce the beginning of spring with freshness and cheerfulness.

Planting and care

The Peach tree ‘Benedicte’ should be planted in October or November. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water to moisten the entire root ball by capillary action. Place compost at the bottom of the hole. Install the tree and fill the planting hole with soil and compost. Gently pack around the base as you fill; the roots should be in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be covered entirely. Water thoroughly immediately after planting.

The peach tree develops a semi-pivoting root system and thrives in relatively deep and well-drained soils. It also prefers light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune before vegetation starts. Fruit appears on one-year-old branches. Wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For fruiting pruning, prune branches that have already borne fruit two buds above the future branching. To maintain the goblet shape that is so practical at harvest time, remove the branches in the centre that intertwine and shorten the longest branches that extend outwards to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
