Description

The Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green' is a cultivar close to the botanical species, with beautiful succulent, dark green, shiny, waxy, thick, elliptical leaves borne on thick stems. This small plant with an upright and compact habit is easy to care for, undemanding, and occasionally produces subtle greenish-white spiky inflorescences, though its main appeal remains its decorative foliage. It prefers bright light without direct sunlight but also adapts to medium light levels.

Belonging to the Piperaceae family, the genus Peperomia includes around 1,700 species with generally thick and fleshy foliage. These plants are native to Central and South America as well as Asia and some are found as far as Florida. They grow naturally in tropical undergrowth, in soft light and high humidity, often as epiphytes or among rocks. The Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green' is an ornamental cultivar derived from the Peperomia obtusifolia or Baby Rubber Plant species. Native to countries from Florida to tropical America, widespread in humid tropical regions, it develops dark green succulent leaves on thick, upright stems with a compact and robust habit. These fleshy leaves are designed to store water, helping the plant withstand occasional droughts. The plant typically does not exceed 30 to 40 cm in height with a similar spread.
The name 'Peperomia' is derived from the Greek words 'peperi' (pepper) and 'homoios' (resembling). This etymology highlights the plant's connection to the Piperaceae family, which also includes black pepper (Piper nigrum).

The Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green' joins a collection of easy-care houseplants such as the Asparagus, certain Philodendrons, or the Scindapsus pictus. This peperomia thrives in standard household humidity levels without the need for misting, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. It can therefore be placed in any room. A pretty contrasting-coloured planter will highlight its glossy leaves.

Maintenance and care

Water once a week when the compost is dry. Empty the saucer. In winter, reduce the watering frequency.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring
Use a well-draining and aerated mix, with perlite or a cactus mix. This helps prevent excess moisture from settling around the roots and reduces the risk of root rot. Add a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot to avoid water stagnation.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10) monthly during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Potential issues arise from overwatering or poor drainage (soft or yellow leaves).

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in soapy water and isolate the plant until the parasitic pests disappear. If attacked by red spider mites, shower the plant several times.
