Description

Scindapsus pictus or Silver Pothos is a variety often grown in our homes as it displays very pretty heart-shaped leaves spotted with silver and is easy to manage. Its climbing or trailing habit adapts perfectly to contemporary or 'urban jungle' styles. Ideal in a hanging basket or on a shelf, it will add a natural and chic touch to your decor. To ensure well-rounded growth, place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight and make sure its substrate dries out a little between waterings.

Commonly called silver pothos or satin pothos, Scindapsus pictus belongs to the Araceae family. This climbing perennial is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Bangladesh, Borneo, India, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Taiwan, and Thailand. Scindapsus pictus has a climbing habit if provided with a support, or a trailing habit if left free. Its stems can reach between 80 cm and 3 m in length indoors, depending on growing conditions. Its heart-shaped leaves typically measure between 5 and 10 cm in length. They are smooth and dark green, with silver spots and markings, giving the plant an attractive marbled appearance. This plant is slow-growing, making it ideal for indoor cultivation.

Warning: This plant is toxic if ingested, potentially causing irritation in humans and pets.

Note: the Latin name pictus means 'painted', referring to the silver patterns that adorn its leaves, giving the impression that they have been delicately hand-painted.

Scindapsus pictus thrives in bright rooms such as a living room or office, where it can enjoy light and a constant temperature. Grow it in a hanging basket to showcase its trailing stems, or let it climb up a support in a textured ceramic pot for a sophisticated touch. Pair it with a Monstera deliciosa or a Philodendron 'Brasil', both low-maintenance, for a harmonious urban jungle effect.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. In its native habitat, Scindapsus pictus grows under forest cover, clinging to trees with its aerial roots. It prefers moderate to bright indirect light, avoiding direct sun, which can burn its leaves. A fairly high ambient humidity is beneficial, although it tolerates typical indoor conditions. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 29°C. With its silver-spotted leaves, it enhances modern and minimalist décors, but fits just as well into bohemian or natural styles. Grow it in a hanging basket to showcase its trailing stems, or let it climb a support in a textured ceramic pot for a sophisticated touch.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the compost is dry on the surface, approximately once a week. Reduce watering in winter. Mist the leaves regularly to maintain humidity, especially during the heating season.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot young plants of Scindapsus pictus at the beginning of spring every year, then every 2 to 3 years when the pot exceeds 25 cm in diameter. If repotting is not necessary, carry out an annual top-dressing by replacing the top few centimetres of compost with fresh potting soil.
Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter, a light blend with clay pebbles for good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) once a month during the growing period (spring and summer). Dilute the fertiliser to half the recommended dose to avoid over-fertilisation. Reduce the application in winter.

Houseplant care

Scindapsus pictus requires minimal maintenance. Regularly clean its leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. Keep an eye out for yellowing or browning leaves, possible signs of overwatering or excessive sun exposure, and adjust care accordingly.
No specific pruning is required; however, to encourage denser growth and control stem length, you can pinch out or trim the stem tips in spring. The cut stems can be used for propagation by cuttings, an easy process in just a glass of water.

Disease and pest advice

If scale insects appear, clean the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water or 70% alcohol. For root rot, reduce watering. To prevent red spider mites, increase ambient humidity by regularly misting the foliage, as these pests thrive in dry conditions.
