Description
Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Big Pink' is a trailing variety, covered with large, bright and cheerful pink flowers. It blooms very early and for a long time, and its funnel-shaped flowers completely cover its foliage from spring to autumn. Its cascading, constantly blooming silhouette and its beautiful heat resistance make this annual the queen of hanging baskets. It is easy to grow and requires little maintenance.
Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or frost-tender perennial plants are most often grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia Petunia is a fairly recent sterile hybrid petunia with a trailing and weeping habit rather than an upright one, making it a magnificent plant for hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.
Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Big Pink' forms a vigorous, dense, and trailing clump, with creeping and downy stems that tumble down over 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in). The plant flowers from May to October provided it is regularly fed and watered. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 8 cm (3in) in diameter and a very bright pink. They nestle against each other on dense foliage. The dark green, hairy leaves are ovate and pointed, with entire edges. The foliage is vigorous and healthy. This variety has an exceptional habit and requires very little maintenance, as its sterile flowers easily remove themselves.
Plant Petunia Surfinia Trailing 'Big Pink' in large pots or hanging baskets, alone or accompanied by other, harmonious varieties such as 'Designer Buzz Purple' or 'Coral Morn' or in contrast with varieties with black or green flowers. In flower beds, plant several plants to form ground cover at the base of pastel-coloured flowering plants such as annual poppies. No other flowering annual plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in the splendour and length of their flowering.
Supplied as 4 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) growing plug plants in 5 small plugs measuring 2.8 cm (1in) in diameter and 4 cm (2in) in height, labelled separately. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.
Note: Attention, our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care
You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts are over (surfinia petunias can tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-bearing, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer periods. They are floriferous and rapidly growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
