The cold-hardy cacti featured here tolerate at least –10 °C and can overwinter outdoors in the ground in many regions. The hardiest varieties withstand temperatures down to –20 °C, or even lower. However, their frost resistance depends on soil moisture: they overwinter more successfully in well-drained ground, particularly in a rock garden or on a slope.

Among the toughest is Opuntia humifusa 'Millevaches'; this small prickly pear cactus forms a low carpet and withstands temperatures down to -20°C. More imposing, Opuntia phaeacantha 'Mojavensis' bears large pale yellow flowers tinged with pink. Opuntia engelmannii var. rastrera spreads widely and produces yellow or pink flowers that turn orange as they fade. Cylindropuntia imbricata raises its cylindrical segments and blooms in fuchsia pink in early summer.

Prickly pears include many other varieties, but their hardiness varies greatly, depending on the species. A few barrel and cushion cacti can also overwinter outdoors, while the more tender ones are grown in pots.
The article "Outdoor cacti and succulents: planting, growing and caring for them" explains how to plant them and protect them from winter dampness.
