More information

The most evergreen of the Chinese reeds currently available on the market. This Miscanthus forms a beautiful clump of fine, fresh green leaves and offers, in late summer, a flowering of beige plumes turning silvery white. Under a medium climate, it remains green in winter, and its inflorescences stay decorative until late in the season. This undemanding selection can be grown in the sun in ordinary garden soil. Superb in a border or in a large pot.

Description

Miscanthus sinensis ‘Juliette’ Miscanvert® (Chinese silver grass, eulalia) has been selected for a rare quality among miscanthus: foliage that remains green in winter in not too harsh climates. In summer, it offers beige plume-like inflorescences that remain decorative for a long time. This large ornamental grass maintains a beautiful presence throughout the year. It can be planted in the garden or in a large container on a terrace. Useful for small wildlife and undemanding, it appeals to both amateur gardeners and professional landscapers.

Belonging to the Poaceae family, Miscanthus sinensis is a species native to East Asia, found from China to Japan and as far as Southeast Asia, where it occupies open and sunny environments.
‘Juliette’ is a French introduction by Marc-Henri Doyon, also marketed under the name Evergriin® and protected (PBR EU70665; EU Plant Variety Rights: EU2025/0469). The plant, with a mat-forming, non-running rootstock, forms a clump composed of long, flexible, linear, bright green leaves marked with a lighter central vein. At maturity, it reaches about 1.20 m in height (for the foliage) and up to 1.80 m when in flower. Flowering begins in July-August and remains decorative until January: airy, coppery-coloured panicles rise above the foliage, then turn beige and silvery-white as they age.
To allow the foliage to remain nicely green in winter, place your Miscanvert® Miscanthus in full sun, in a position sheltered from cold winds and in soil not waterlogged in winter. It tolerates around -20 °C and requires little water once well established. In spring, its evergreen foliage generally does not need cutting back.

Chinese silver grass 'Juliette' is superb in a sunny border, along a path, near a terrace, or in a large, deep pot. Among ornamental grasses, Miscanthus is probably one of the most beautiful. It has been the subject of many selections and is the origin of numerous cultivars. Miscanvert® is a wonderful perennial that grows on its own. It has its place in a contemporary garden, or in large beds where it will lighten the flower displays. You can associate it with tall autumn astersVeronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Blackfield’, and Sanguisorba officinalis ‘Tanna’. Finally, this Eulalia can be used for beautiful dried cut flower arrangements.

Planting and care

Miscanthus sinensis Miscanvert thrives in sunny positions and a healthy, fairly rich and deep, well-loosened, well-drained soil that does not remain waterlogged in winter. This variety tolerates occasional summer drought and proves to be undemanding in terms of water. If the foliage has dried in winter, it should be pruned close to the ground in early spring.
For container planting, choose a wide and deep pot with holes in the base, and fertile, well-draining and flexible growing medium. A mixture formed of 20% good garden soil, 20% a blend of draining elements (pumice, gravel or coarse river sand), 60% horticultural compost. Add well-rotted compost once or twice a year (late winter and autumn) or a slow-release fertiliser. When it becomes less floriferous, divide the clump and replant the peripheral shoots.
