Agapanthus Arctic Star - Fleur de l'amour, Tubéreuse bleue, Lis du Nil

The 'Arctic Star' agapanthus, topped in summer with large umbels of pure white flowers from a young age, will quickly become the star of a border, or even the patio. Not very tall but highly floriferous, this agapanthus easily finds its place in the garden. It bears its large, luminous umbels atop sturdy, stocky stems. It is a generous and relatively hardy plant that will thrive in full sun, in rich, well-drained soil.

Agapanthus are plants of the Amaryllidaceae family, native to South Africa. Several species have been extensively hybridised by horticulturists in search of new colours, more compact and hardier plants, better suited to our climates.
The 'Arctic Star' cultivar was raised in Great Britain by Richard John Fulcher. This plant develops and multiplies rapidly from a rootstock with fleshy rhizomes, forming from spring a dense clump of linear, glossy dark green foliage, at least 60 cm in diameter, widening over time. Flowering takes place in summer, from June-July to August-September. Numerous very sturdy stems, on average 80 cm tall, emerge in succession from the clump of foliage. They bear at their tips large, almost spherical umbels, 15 cm in diameter, composed of many small, campanulate, pure white flowers, enhanced by white stamens with brown anthers, and carried on long peduncles. The foliage dies down completely in winter.

The 'Arctic Star' agapanthus is a star of the garden, with its large white inflorescences rising above a well-filled clump. The luminous colour of the flowers, as well as their abundance, will add an elegant and exotic touch to your borders. Relatively hardy, it adapts easily to many regions that are not too cold, especially if its rootstock is protected by a thick mulch in winter. Whether in a border, at the edge, in a large rockery, in a pot or container, the agapanthus suits a wide variety of uses. Particularly well-suited to coastal gardens, it looks very beautiful paired with other mauve or blue varieties in a minimalist setting. It is also used in exotic-themed borders with Kniphofias, daylilies, large grasses and Cannas.
