Description

Aster dumosus 'Peter Harrison' (syn. Aster novi-belgii 'Peter Harrison' and Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Peter Harrison') is a robust perennial with a compact habit. It blooms between August and October with a multitude of mauve-pink flowers resembling small daisies. Its running stump emits ramified stems, adorned with lanceolate, dark green and glossy leaves.

Aster dumosus 'Peter Harrison' is a small aster, 40cm (16in) tall, that brings the garden to life in late summer and early autumn. It thrives in a sunny or slightly shaded position in rich and moist soil. Easy to grow, 'Peter Harrison' is ideal for creating numerous autumnal scenes at a time when most flowering perennial plants have faded. You can place them both at the forefront of a bed and in a flowering pot. Combine it with grasses with slender foliage, tall sedums, and colourful heucheras. It can also beautifully brighten up a border, a wall, or a rockery.

Asters belong to the Asteraceae family, which mainly consists of herbaceous plants. The genus offers a large number of species, represented by a multitude of floriferous varieties. They come in all sizes, with an extremely rich range of colours. Each season, there are several species to choose from, including Aster alpinus or A. tongolensis for spring asters, A. amellus or A. frikartii for summer asters, and A. cordifolius, A. dumosus, A. ericoides, A. lateriflorus, A. novae-angliae, or A. novi-belgii for autumn asters.

Planting and care

Plant in autumn or spring in a bed or border, in rich soil that is not too dry or wet. It prefers a sunny exposure but can tolerate partial shade. In a bed, maintain a spacing of at least 30cm (12in) between the plants. Mulch the soil from the end of spring and water during dry spells, taking care not to wet the foliage to limit the occurrence of powdery mildew, to which asters are susceptible. At the end of flowering, cut back the clump to 10cm (4in). Divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years to maintain vigorous plants, more resistant to powdery mildew.
