Description

Aster ericoides is a beautiful aster producing a dense and ramified bushy clump. From late summer to late autumn, it is covered with an abundance of small white flowers with yellow hearts.

It prefers dry soil.

The Aster genus produces a large number of floriferous perennials, in all colours, for spring, summer or autumn, and for all kinds of uses and growing mediums. Autumn hybrids, tall or small, will benefit from being divided every 2 to 3 years to regenerate the stump and protect them from powdery mildew.

Planting and care

Plant the Aster ericoides in full sun, in well-drained, ordinary to poor soil, even stony, sandy or slightly lime-bearing. It particularly dislikes heavy, waterlogged soils in winter, more so than moderate summer drought (it is not a garrigue plant). In overly rich soil, it grows more and may tend to collapse. When planting, loosen the soil, add a little gravel or coarse sand if needed to improve drainage, then water regularly for the first few weeks. Afterwards, this perennial requires little care. Every 3 to 5 years, divide the stump to rejuvenate it. Very hardy, Aster ericoides tolerates at least -20 °C in healthy, well-drained soil.
