Description

Aster novi-belgii 'Eventide' is a hardy perennial that blooms between September and October in a multitude of flowers resembling small mauve semi-double daisies. The somewhat creeping stump produces ramified stems, adorned with lanceolate, dark green and glossy leaves.

Aster novi-belgii 'Eventide' is a tall Aster, reaching 80 cm (32in) in height, hardy and easy to grow. At a time when most perennials start to tire, this aster takes over with panache. Its mauve flowers with bright yellow centres bring life to the garden in early autumn. It thrives in sun or light shade, sheltered from strong winds, in rich and moist soil. You can plant it at the back of a flowerbed, combined with shrubs bearing yellow or orange autumn foliage, or with other late-flowering perennials such as echinaceas or helianthus. Heucheras offer an excellent contrast of warm colours, and fine-leaved grasses bring lightness to your composition. These asters also make excellent cut flowers.

The genus Aster is extremely diverse and comes in a wide range of colours, with varieties available in all sizes. Depending on the cultivars, it is possible to extend the flowering period right through from spring to late autumn, allowing gardening enthusiasts to enjoy these lovely daisy-like flowers, with their rustic charm, for a large part of the year.

Planting and care

Plant Aster novi-belgii 'Eventide' in the autumn or spring in a rich and moist soil. It enjoys a sunny exposure but tolerates partial shade. We recommend sheltering it from strong winds that would flatten the clumps, or staking the plant. Aster novi-belgii is quite susceptible to powdery mildew, a fungus that forms a whitish deposit on the foliage and buds, weakening the plant. As a preventive measure, maintain a spacing of at least 70 cm (28in) around the plants, regularly clean around them, and remove affected parts (when possible) at the first signs of the disease. Treat preventively from the month of May, preferably with products approved for organic agriculture (e.g. wettable sulfur), horsetail decoction, or nettle manure. During the growing season, you can pinch the tips of the stems at 15 cm (6in) from the ground towards the end of May, to make the clump more compact. To promote the emergence of new shoots, cut the stems of faded flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions Remove the stems and faded flowers down to the ground in late winter. Use shears or a hedge trimmer for larger areas. Divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain strong stumps. An application of organic fertiliser once a year in spring will help revive the brilliance of the flower heads.
