Upon arrival: a huge naked burgundy rhizome in its pot. Planted with a 15/20 cm mulch, it has just produced beautiful leaves and... a small flower stem! We've had quite a bit of rain and the temperature is rather mild. These brunneras are excellent plants!

Description

Brunnera sibirica is a rhizomatous species, forming large clumps covered with pale blue flowers.

Originally from the Russian taiga, Brunnera sibirica has foliage and flowers that are similar to those of the well-known Brunnera macrophylla. In fact, the main difference is due to the development of the stump. While B. macrophylla forms non-suckering clumps, the stump of B. sibirica slowly extends with the help of its rhizomes and over time forms an excellent ground cover.

Its foliage is tough and its blooms are pale blue and continue to flower in spring over a fairly long period.

Brunnera macrophylla and Brunnera siberica are two similar plants, with two different behaviours which differentiate these two species.

Very cold-resistant and easy to grow, Brunnera sibirica thrives in partial shade or full sun and tolerates heavy soils, with a neutral or acidic tendency. Plant it along the edge of a bed, alongside Asian primroses, rodgersias, or hostas.

Planting and care

The cultivation of Brunnera sibirica is easy, plant it in any dry to moist soil, in the sun or in the shade. It thrives better in regions where atmospheric humidity is high, but it still manages to grow in regions where the air is dry although it will grow more slowly and its foliage will be less spectacular.
