Description

Delphinium 'Cha Cha' is part of a new series of perennial larkspurs developed in Scotland, sensational for their many flowers, short and sturdy stems, and fascinating colours. 'Cha Cha' has spikes laden with triple flowers from June to October, with overlapping petals delicately coloured in pale lilac and infused with a darker smoky violet at the centre. Its self-supporting stems allow for beautiful long-lasting bouquets. This very hardy plant thrives in sunny, rich, deep, and well-drained soils, in the garden or in pots.

Delphinium Cha Cha is from the highlander group, named for the famous mountainous and wild region of Scotland, known as the "Highlands". Belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, it comes from the Delphinium elatum, the tall larkspur, which is found in cool meadows at high altitudes in the Eastern Pyrenees and throughout the European Alps, as well as in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, Siberia, Mongolia, and China. This plant has given rise, among others, to the famous 'Pacific Giant' series.

The 'Cha Cha' variety is a robust herbaceous perennial, with a short lifespan but rapid growth. It forms a clump of highly dissected palmate, tender green leaves from which floral stems reaching 80-90cm (32-35in) high, emerge in summer. Flowering begins in June and continues regularly until the first frost, provided that the faded stems are removed. It is loved by pollinating insects. The abundant flowers are composed of 45 to 58 small incurved petals, arranged in several ranks, and gathered on sturdy stems. Their colour is rare and refined: a very pale lilac mauve, touched here and there with a darker violet, but also with light green towards the heart of the flower. The plant develops from a woody rhizome that sinks vertically into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds breadth, height, and charm to perennial plant beds, much like hollyhocks. They make good companions for moss or gallica roses, creating charming and romantic displays. Another beautiful combination can be created with pale pink or soft orange daylilies and baby's breath 'Rosenschleier'. This modest-sized variety can also be supported by small flowering shrubs or tall perennials, such as Escallonia, dwarf buddleias, dwarf lilacs, peonies, shrubby mallow and perennial chrysanthemums, in a flower bed. Its flowers hold up well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching of the crown and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transport.

Planting and care

Delphinium 'Cha Cha' is not difficult to grow but still requires some precautions: delphiniums dislike heavy and wet or dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is deep and fertile, rich in humus, non-compact, moist, even in summer, but without excess wet in winter, and sheltered from strong winds. Under these conditions, they will live for many years. Beware of slugs and snails that can cause damage at the beginning of growth. Full sun will limit the risk of mildew. Place stakes around the plants, according to the size of the variety.
