Description

Larkspur or Delphinium 'Magic Fountain Dark Blue/White Bee' is a perennial, rather stocky variety, with beautiful plumes of semi-double dark purple flowers in summer, lit up by a beautiful white eye. Very ornamental in perennial beds, this variety is less sensitive to bad weather. Also very beautiful in pots near the house, or in bouquets, delphiniums thrive in sunny, rich, deep, permeable soils.

Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Dark Blue/White Bee' is one of many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding D. elatum which gave birth to the famous "Pacific Giant" series, among others. The plants of the Magic Fountain series do not exceed 1 m (3ft) in height, bloom in summer and are resistant to bad weather, which generally exempts them from staking, outside the windiest gardens. Delphinium Magic Fountain is a short-lived herbaceous perennial forming a clump of very dissected palmate, tender green deciduous leaves, from which floral stems of an average height of 90 cm (35in) emerge in summer, a rather modest size for a hybrid delphinium. This height allows it to withstand the wind and not easily topple under the rain. The flowering period is from June to September, highly visited by pollinating insects. The flowers are semi-double, cup-shaped, gathered on tall upright spikes. In this Dark Blue/White Bee variety, the petals are a very dark bluish violet. The flower's centre has a pure white throat. The plant develops from a woody rhizome that sinks into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds grandeur, height, and charm to romantic beds. They are good companions for moss or gallica roses, forming charming compositions, in the purest English style. You can also create a beautiful association with pink daylilies, mauve or blue paniculate phlox, and paniculate baby's breath. The flowers hold up well and are particularly appreciated in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to allow better branching and optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Plant delphiniums in spring after the last frost, in a sunny location, in moist, rich, and well-drained soil. Leave at least two or three shoots on young plants and five to seven on already well-established delphiniums. During growth, water once or twice a week and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. Remove faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small lateral flowering shoots. Cut the entire plant down to ground level in autumn. Protect your delphiniums from slugs and snails that are fond of their leaves.

Tips: Dare to go tall with these giant plants that add structure and balance volumes in the garden. The tallest ones will provide volume and lightness against a dark background of hedges or conifers. Intermediate-sized ones will adorn flowerbeds with giant dahlias. Look after the vegetation with regular watering. Watch out for slugs and snails.
