Description

Echinacea purpurea offers a long flowering period from July to October with large solitary pink-purple flowers with a coppery brown cone-shaped centre measuring 3 to 8cm (1 to 3in) long. These flowers, measuring 5 to 12cm (2 to 5in) long, can be cut to create beautiful bouquets, appreciated by florists.

The flowers are borne on green stems tinged with red. The deciduous leaves are dark green and measure 4 to 15cm (2 to 6in) long. Echinacea can reach a height of up to 1m (3ft). It is highly hardy and originates from the United States.

It is a honey plant that attracts butterflies. Echinacea can be found in perennial beds and with grasses. This medicinal plant is mainly used against cold and flu.

Planting and care

Echinacea purpurea appreciates a sunny or slightly shaded exposure. Plant it in a fairly poor and well-drained soil. Nevertheless, it accepts any type of soil. It is a hardy plant that withstands drought, heat, and humidity. It even adapts when it is close to the coast or on a slope. Cut back the stems when the flowers have withered to promote the next flowering. Echinacea doesn't like to be disturbed: avoid moving it.
