Description

Echinacea Sombrero Baja Burgundy is a simple and elegant variety of Echinacea, with flowers of a rich and vibrant burgundy red, which have a beautiful effect in flowerbeds. Of medium size, its slightly trailing flower heads are centred on a small, rounded and bristly brownish-red cone. Vigorous, well-branched, compact, and with sturdy stems, it brings life to flowerbeds, sunny borders and pots from June. It is also a trouble-free and undemanding plant.

Echinacea Sombrero Baja Burgundy belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a horticultural creation resulting from Rudbeckia purpurea, among others, originating from the western United States, Georgia to Michigan, passing through Oklahoma and Ohio. This perennial with a strong character, confidently colonizes rocky meadows, savannahs, clear undergrowth, and road edges in its natural environment. Echinacea Sombrero Baja Burgundy, obtained by Darwin Perennials in the United States, has a solid and bushy habit, reaching a height of approximately 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) with an equivalent spread. The opposite, lanceolate green leaves are covered in rough hair. It blooms early, from June to August, is slightly fragrant and loved by butterflies. The branched stems are each topped with a solitary head, 8 cm (3in) in diameter, with a brownish-red disc surrounded by slightly trailing, abundant, overlapping ligules of a beautiful burgundy red. The fruit is an achene that releases seeds that birds enjoy. This plant firmly and deeply anchors itself in the soil, thanks to its well-developed root system. It is deciduous.

Rudbeckia Sombrero Baja Burgundy enhances flowerbeds, borders, and terraces with its beautiful minimalist and well-groomed flowers, loved by butterflies. Play with different-shaped flowers such as Foxglove or Yarrows. Beautiful golden grasses complement its colour beautifully, Stipa tenuifolia, Pennisetums, or Muhlenbergia capillaris. It also adds depth to fresh or dried flower bouquets. Its association with Common Lady's Mantle is superb!

Planting and care

Plant them in moist, deep, well-prepared soil, in a sunny exposure. These vigorous plants are demanding and will thrive better if you regularly feed them with a good fertilizer and they do not lack water during flowering. Cut back faded flowers at the end of summer to prevent self-seeding.
