Description

Euphorbia Black Bird is a mutant of the Euphorbia Redwing 'Charam', of English origin. It has a compact habit, forming a ball shape. The flowering period lasts from March to May, yellow and purple with a red peduncle. Euphorbia Black Bird is remarkable for its persistent young foliage, which is a deep purple colour that darkens in sunny situations. The lanceolate-shaped leaves gradually turn bronze-green and reach a length of 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in), and they are evergreen.

Euphorbia has rapid growth, reaching a height of up to 40 cm (16in), which allows it to quickly create a decorative effect in newly planted gardens. Robust, this perennial can withstand the most challenging conditions.

Euphorbia Black Bird is suitable for containers or pots due to its compact habit, as well as for perennial and shrub borders. Combining it with vibrant colours adds vitality, especially when paired with purple, blue, or white (hyacinths) to enhance its brightness and create less contrasting contrasts. Euphorbia Black Bird was awarded the gold medal at Plantarium 2004. It is a toxic plant if ingested.

Planting and care

Plant Euphorbia Black Bird in full sun or in partially shaded areas in fresh and well-drained or even poor and rocky soil. Its planting period takes place in the middle of spring (April-May) or at the beginning of autumn. This euphorbia tolerates the sun and drought well and does not have any particular requirements. However, it is sensitive to excessive water, which is why if your soil is heavy and compact, lighten it with gravel or coarse sand to prevent waterlogging. You can also plant the plants on a slope or near a wall, which promotes water drainage. Euphorbias do not tolerate being moved, as their roots are sensitive to injury. Also, when the euphorbia is thriving in a location, it spreads easily. Reduce the runners (those with rhizomes) by cutting them cleanly with a spade. Handle euphorbias with caution due to the latex that flows from them, which can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. Mulch around the stumps with gravel to limit weed growth and soil compaction. Cut back the floral stems once the inflorescences have completely faded to avoid contact with latex. Winter pruning does not cause any problems as the sap is not abundant.

Care

Pruning instructions Low maintenance, intervene in winter to maintain the shape of the plant by removing the excessively long stems and those that have flowered, however be careful to eliminate only the most vigorous shoots that have developed in the previous spring, as they are the ones that bear the flowers. Equip yourself with gloves and goggles, as the latex present in the stems and leaves can cause irritations.
