Description

Filipendula palmata, or Palmate Filipendula, is a hardy rhizomatous perennial with large palmate leaves of a beautiful shiny green. It bears pink feathery flowers. All this constitutes a beautiful combination of luxuriance and lightness, superb in a woodland atmosphere.

Belonging to the extensive rose family, it offers, from June to August, a delicate flowering in feathery corymbs with a slightly pendulous habit. Its deciduous foliage is dark green and glossy, composed of large palmate leaves, deeply lobed. Together, they form a dense clump with a height of 1 metre (3 feet) that spreads over 60 cm (24in).

Originally from Asia, Filipendula palmata, sometimes called Palmate Spirea, is quite similar to Meadowsweet. It is a undemanding plant, hardy down to -15°C (5°F), that can tolerate average soil, even heavy, as long as it remains moist. But it performs best in rich and humus-bearing soil, in full sun or partial shade. During particularly dry summers, we advise you to closely monitor watering in order not to weaken it, as this would make it susceptible to mildew.

In the garden, it will make a sensation when planted in mass in a moist woodland or near a pond or marsh. In partial shade, for a fresh and luxuriant atmosphere, we suggest pairing it with other perennials with generous foliage such as Acanthus Mollis, Hosta 'Sun Power' or even Palmate Rhubarb .

Planting and care

Filipendula palmata is not very demanding and quite hardy. It can tolerate a medium, even heavy, soil as long as it remains moist. However, it thrives in rich and humus-bearing soil, in full sun or partial shade. During particularly dry summers, we recommend closely monitoring the watering to prevent weakening the plant, which could make it susceptible to mildew.
