More information

A duo of Dame's Rocket with pink-lilac or white or pink flowering, depending on the variety, all of them fragrant. They are short-lived perennial plants, often grown as biennials. They form upright, sparsely branched clumps in a few months, reaching 60 to 80 cm in height when in bloom and 30 cm in diameter. Their flower clusters open from May to July, and their jasmine-like fragrance spreads in the evening. Plant them in rustic flower beds, where they require very little maintenance and readily self-seed.

Description

This duo of Dame's Rocket in pink and white will enhance your rustic flower beds without requiring much maintenance. These short-lived perennial plants, often grown as biennials, are ideal for adding life to semi-shaded areas of the garden where the soil remains slightly moist in summer. They quickly form beautiful, highly flowering clumps that emit a fragrance in the evening. From spring to mid-summer, they are animated by the constant flight of pollinating insects. Plant them in rustic flower beds, where they will easily self-seed.

The Duo consists of:

x 1 Hesperis matronalis: the species, Dame's Rocket whose flowers display shades of mauve to lilac pink.

x 1 Hesperis matronalis 'Alba': beautiful form with simple white flowers, equally fragrant.

Plant these Dame's Rockets in March-April in fertile, deep, moist, but well-drained soil. They thrive in any good garden soil, not too dry in summer, not too wet in winter, even chalky soil. They prefer a semi-shaded exposure (morning sun). Plant 4 plants in 1m². Plant the collar of the plant 2 cm below the surface of the soil. Mulch the base to maintain moisture and water in summer if necessary.

Dame's Rockets form beautiful clumps on the edge of woodland and in naturalistic-inspired flower beds. We rarely consider it, but these plants can also be grown in pots in groups of 3 or 4 plants. You can plant daffodils and tulips among Dame's Rockets, for example. Or create an impressionist tableau with bearded irises, snapdragons, bellflowers, and pale blue, white or purple delphiniums. You can also pair them with our collection of paniculate phlox in shades of mauve, pink, and white.

Planting and care

Plant in March-April, preferably in partial shade. Full sun is also suitable, but it should not be too scorching and the soil should not dry out too deeply. Plant in fertile, deep, moist, but well-drained soil. Bury the collar of the plant 2 cm below the surface of the soil. The plant needs to be kept moist throughout the year. Not much maintenance is required. Just remove faded flowers to promote flowering. Water in case of drought during the summer to achieve an abundance of flowers. The stems are resistant to wind and do not require staking. Beware of viruses and mildew, as well as snails, slugs, caterpillars, and flea beetles that can harm the plant.
