The Perennial Geranium maculatum var. album is a natural variety of the American Geranium with white flowers. It forms a robust and vigorous stump, yet light and very airy. The flowers bloom in late spring and early summer. The main interest of this graceful plant is its great adaptability to wet, even marshy soils, as well as its very high hardiness.
Â
Geranium maculatum var. album belongs to the geranium family, it originates from boreal America, in the east and west of Canada, the southeast of the United States, where it grows in the damp undergrowth of mountains. It is a perennial plant 30 to 75 cm (12 to 30in), with a thick and vigorous stump, and upright hairy stems. The plant has an airy appearance while being erect. Its growth is rapid. It blooms in the first part of summer, from late May to July. The flowers, white and single, are grouped in 3 to 5 on peduncles about 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) long coming from the fluffy floral stem. The petals are slightly notched. The foliage is deciduous and pubescent, the glossy leaves are deeply divided, they have 5 to 7 lobes and are relatively dark green, strongly veined, carried by long petioles measuring 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14in).
Â
The flowering of this Perennial Geranium is neither garish nor spectacular, but it is immaculate and the plant has a light habit, assets that are noticeable in the undergrowth. It can be used very well as a ground cover and tolerates the company of other plants. It is ideal for the second plan of shaded flower beds, its foliage fills the space. In the undergrowth, it is a good companion for euphorbias with acid green and lungworts with pastel tones. Geranium pohaeum and nodosum will fulfill the same functions, in the shade. Install it along a North or East pathway, among ferns and bergenia, in front of hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and camellias. It will blend very well with all shade and semi-shade perennials. It is also a plant that can be placed on the edge of water points.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
