Description

Hellebore Silvermoon is a hybrid originating from Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose) and Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore). From January to March, large white flowers appear, which later turn a delightful pink, 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter. Hellebore has a bushy habit.

This Hellebore is hardy down to -20°C (-4°F). It has winter interest. One of its main advantages is its long flowering period. It is ideal for cut flowers. It also provides good ground cover. It pairs well with ferns or Iris foetidissima, lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver', and Erythronium. It is a toxic flower.

It is a robust plant which is not too tall (30 cm (12in) in height) with exceptionally beautiful silver-green, evergreen and tough foliage. Its basal leaves (palmate with slightly dissected lobes) measure from 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12in) long. It is a sterile hybrid, and vegetative propagation is very difficult.

Planting and care

Hellebore Silver Moon likes rich, rather heavy and well-worked soils. Plant it in partial shade in neutral to alkaline, fertile and humus-bearing soil that is also moist, and incorporate good compost to help it establish. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause rotting. Planting it under the dappled shade of large leafy trees is ideal. They are easy-going plants but should not be stressed. These perennials have a reputation for being homebodies: once well-established, they do not like to be transplanted. Young plants may take 2 to 3 years, sometimes more, before flowering then there will be no more problems. Over the weeks, their colour darkens but they do not wilt like most flowers, they dry up instead.
