Ordered in autumn 2020, arrived with a mini shoot which is normal because it is in dormancy. Very good recovery, the flowering this summer was simply sublime, the colour is even more beautiful than in the photos on your website. If you have to buy only one daylily, this is the one to choose.

Description

Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Candy', or Daylily, blooms in round, coral-pink flowers with a dark pink eye and a golden-yellow heart. Floriferous and early, its flowers remain open from sunrise for sixteen hours. Its foliage is evergreen under most of our climates, and it is a hardy and perpetual variety.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage, and are sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Strawberry Candy' variety grows in clumps, reaching 65 cm (26 in) in height, with a spread of 60 cm (24 in). The flowers measure about 10 cm (4 in) in diameter; they are rounded and quite thick. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but flowering continuously renews over a beautiful period between June and July, and then returns at the end of summer. The stems are robust and allow for beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

Very easy to grow, daylilies thrive in both shade and sun. They have a reputation for being "the perfect perennial plant", due to their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also because of their lack of modesty: they display a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. All garden plants are welcome; also consider grasses, with their flexible and light habit. On a balcony or terrace, large pots with a minimum depth of 30 cm (12 in) should be used, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Candy' in good garden soil that is not too clayey, and that is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will tolerate summer drought well and will not suffer from winter frost. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive both in shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of sunlight per day being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you are planting several plants, do not place them too closely to each other as the gaps will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn, after flowering.
