Description

Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' is a brand new American creation that stands out for its extraordinary evergreen foliage, precious and rich with changing reflections, like the facets of a gemstone. As its amethyst name suggests, this variety develops a purple-violet foliage, sprinkled with mauve-silver, with laminae crossed by a network of black veins. Tiny pale pink flowers adorn long and slender spikes that stand out well from the foliage and play with the mischievous wind that often blows at the end of spring. Not demanding, this very beautiful heuchera tolerates dryness, but thrives in humus-rich and fresh soils.

Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' belongs to the saxifrage family. It will reach a height of 25 cm (10 in) for the foliage and 40 cm (16 in) in width. This heuchera forms a beautiful spreading cushion. The foliage is the major asset of this plant: the juvenile leaves are purple-chocolate, then they are a mix of purple and wine dregs, violet and silver, enhanced by a shiny texture that plays with the light. All show a dark red-purple underside. The leaves of this heuchera, 7 cm (3 in) wide, are round in shape and strongly lobed and veined. The light and airy flowering, in the form of 60 cm (24 in) tall spikes, begins in May-June and continues until July. The pink flowers in small bell shapes are arranged along an erect stem. These long spikes playing with the wind give a blurred appearance to this romantic flowering. It is this movement that is so difficult to capture on a canvas that has earned heucheras the nickname of "despair of the painter". This plant has a shallow root system.

Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' should be planted in the ground in a flower bed, in a shaded and cool rockery, or in a pot. In a row in a flower bed, this heuchera will bring dynamism to the garden. Associate it with hostas, grasses, and ferns for a wild effect. It will also be a good companion for shrubs and roses. In a rockery, place a contrasting mulch at its feet with its beautiful foliage. Finally, it is an ideal ground cover with remarkable colours. Associate this heuchera with grey foliage and blue flowers, which will be reflected in its foliage: they will complement each other perfectly. Heuchera is an ideal plant to fill your pots, containers, and flower boxes. A good cut flower, the graceful bells of this plant add a lot of lightness to bouquets.

Heucheras with trembling stems and tiny bells were very fashionable in the 19th century in all European gardens.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' thrives in all well-drained, moist soils, in partial shade, and it is imperative that you avoid full sun. It has good heat and cold resistance. You should plant it in loose soil that is rich enough in humus, possibly providing mulch. It likes well-draining soils and rocks in and above the soil. However, it does not tolerate very hot conditions. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid planting it near overly vigorous perennials. Heucheras have rather shallow root systems and you must plant them a little lower than the crown (the point where the foliage begins). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you must replant them a little deeper, taking care to remove the lignified parts.
