Hosta ‘Fire and Ice’ is planted in spring or early autumn, in a deep, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil. Light shade, or light filtered through deciduous trees, offers it the best conditions. A few hours of morning sun encourage its growth, but afternoon sun can scorch the white centre of the leaves. Excessive shade also slows its development, as the white parts do not produce chlorophyll. Regular watering is necessary during dry periods. Division is carried out in spring, once the clump is well established.
With their shared preference for damp places, slugs and snails never settle very far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker, tougher foliage, and are therefore less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your hosta plants by surrounding them with ferramol-based granules (approved for organic farming), eggshells, coffee grounds, wood chippings or any dry, rough natural substance that deters them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods, because unlike hens, they do not scratch up the soil and do not attack the green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a scent that repels slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
