Tiny clumps that make planting between stepping stones easier. The young plants at the end of these clumps have a very nice appearance, beautiful vitality, no yellow leaves. Truly perfect quality. Looking forward to spring.

More information

A hardy primrose, which has the peculiarity of producing several floral stems of varying heights that bloom at the same time: the plant resembles a true bouquet of flowers throughout its flowering period, which extends from winter to spring. Its pale yellow corollas open above a small tuft of bright green leaves, decorative outside of the flowering period. A perennial or biennial, it will thrive in partial shade or mild sunlight, in a humus-rich, fertile, and moist soil.

Description

Primula elatior 'Colibri Light Yellow' is a variety of primrose that produces a 'layered' flowering in a light yellow colour, creating a striking bouquet effect. It is also characterised by a very long flowering period, from winter to spring, and a more perennial nature than standard primroses. Very hardy, floriferous, and unusual, this plant will make a sensation near a passage or on a window sill, to be able to contemplate it at leisure. It will bring life to any decor in partial shade, planted in a humus-rich, fertile and moist soil.

Primula elatior, also known as Oxlip, is a herbaceous perennial plant that is mostly found in the partial shade of clear woodlands or on the edge of forests. When abundant, this species is an indicator of ancient forests, little disturbed by human activity. This plant has produced many short-lived perennial hybrids through hybridisation with the Common Primrose (Primula vulgaris), often cultivated as biennial plants.

This 'Colibri Light Yellow' primrose blooms from early January for 11 weeks, until the end of March or early April. On each plant, a multitude of floral stems, more or less short and ranging from 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 in) in height, each bear umbels filled with single flowers, in compound cups with rounded petals, in a pastel-yellow colour. Their bright colour is well highlighted by evergreen foliage in rosettes of large, heavily corrugated leaves in a fresh green, which is ornamental even outside the flowering period.

Elatior primroses are less well known than stemless primroses, but they have their own advantages: they are taller, hardier, and more perennial, and their flowering is also more spectacular. They are excellent companions for shade-loving perennials and those in cool, light woodlands, such as heucheras, Brunnera, forget-me-nots, horned violets, or even hostas. They can also be used to decorate the terrace, window, or balcony, planted in planters that will brighten up spring scenes. They also hold up very well in a simple bouquet, mixed with forget-me-nots or early tulips.

Planting and care

Primula elatior 'Colibri' should be planted in pots and flower boxes or directly in the ground in a finely prepared soil enriched with compost, that is not too chalky. Plant them, if possible upon receipt, in September-October or in March-April. If the planned location is not ready yet or if the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can let them grow in plug plants for 4 to 6 weeks. Choose a sunny but not scorching exposure.

In pots and flower boxes, use a good soil for flowering plants (geranium compost type) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, that is light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it does not rain or if the container is placed in an area sheltered from precipitation. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or the beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, provide a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
