Description

Primula acaulis ‘Frilly YTT Jeans’ is an exceptional primrose, whose surprising colouring recalls the faded hues of denim. This mid-early winter-flowering variety bears finely ruffled tricolour flowers. The "YTT" effect (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow) evokes the evolution of the flower colour: they shift from porcelain white to faded jean blue, through to a deep denim blue. Truly original and charming, it fits equally well in pots, planters or at the edge of beds. Grow in partial shade, in a moist and well-drained soil, sheltered from heavy frosts.

Primula acaulis ‘Frilly YTT Jeans’ is a mid-early flowering hybrid primrose, which stands out for its evolving and decidedly original colouring. It belongs to the ‘Frilly’ series, developed for its slightly retro-looking ruffled flowers. This 'Jeans' cultivar forms a compact and harmonious rosette and produces medium-sized flowers (approximately 4 to 5 cm in diameter) with a golden-yellow centre. They open first as a porcelain white, then turn to a soft jean blue, and finish their flowering in a deep denim blue, always highlighted by a fine white edging that gives them a very decorative frosted appearance. Carried just above a dark green crinkled foliage, they form pretty, dense and regular floral clusters that catch the eye without being garish. As it begins flowering between January and February, this primrose is ideal for bridging the gap between winter and spring.

Theoretically perennial, the 'Frilly YTT Jeans' primrose can live for several years in good conditions (mild climate, well-drained soil), but it is often cultivated as a seasonal annual. It can also be placed indoors temporarily, in a cool and bright room.

Primula ‘Frilly Jeans’ is perfect for composing pastel and refined winter scenes, in beds as well as in pots. Its colouring in shades of blue and white marries wonderfully with the purple foliage of heucheras such as 'Forever Purple' or 'Midnight Rose'. Also pair it with pansies in cool shades, black horned violets ('Sorbet Black Delight'), or with early bulbs such as muscari and snowdrops.

Planting and care

'Frilly Jeans' primroses should be planted in containers and planters or directly into open ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible after receipt. If the intended location is not yet ready or conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. Their hardiness rarely exceeds -10/-12°C in well-drained soil.

For containers and planters, use a good, light and well-draining flowering plant compost (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The top of the root ball should be level with the compost. Water thoroughly at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater! Ensure containers have drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during frost periods.

Being very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are greedy plants. Once growth resumes, from late February to early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times per week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new flowering. Once flowering has finished, container-grown plants can be replanted in partial shade in the garden.
