Package received today. Different plants arranged in a head-to-tail fashion, with the tallest ones in a box specified "must remain horizontal". However, they were delivered vertically by DPD, resulting in breakage. Beautiful plants, but out of the 3 stems, two are the same color, 1 yellow and 2 pale violet in shade. What a pity!

A perennial evergreen whose leaves are sometimes covered with a white bloom. The spring flowering takes the form of an umbel composed of 10 to 30 scented flowers with a generally powdery yellow centre surrounded by pink, carmine red, brown, black, violet, etc. Its cultivation, sometimes delicate in pots, requires a fresh, humus-rich but well-drained soil, and a rather shaded exposure.

Description

The Bear's Ear Primroses or Primula auricula in this mix are derived from a perennial and evergreen European montane species, whose fragrant and velvety flowers display extraordinary colours, usually bicoloured, in different shades of pink, carmine red, brown, mahogany, black, violet around a yellow heart. This small velvet-like plant forms rosettes with leaves covered in white bloom. Like some alpines, it can be delicate to grow in pots. A delightful flowering for a small garden, a plant to enjoy...

The Auricula Primrose (Primula x pubescens) is a perennial plant with golden yellow flowers from the Primrose family, native to the Alps. Cultivated since the 16th century, a spontaneous mutation produced flowers in shades of grey, pale green and almost black violet. This small plant became a true passion for some collectors during the 19th century in the region of Liège (Belgium). The numerous hybridisations carried out by these experienced enthusiasts multiplied the colours. It became common for these enthusiasts to display their collection of Auricula Primroses in front of their homes on 4 or 5-level shelves called "Auricula Theatres".

The mix offered here is a selection of homogeneous forms, with single flowers. The plants measure approximately 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) in height and the same in width. Each produces evergreen leaves measuring 6 to 12 cm (2 to 5in), arranged in a rosette, with a spatulate and rounded shape, pale green or greyish in colour. The flowering, with a sweet sugary scent, extends from March to May. From the rosette of leaves emerges an upright stem bearing an umbel of 10 to 30 bicoloured flowers measuring 1.5 to 2.5 cm (1in) in diameter. The flattened cup has a yellow heart surrounded by a secondary colour usually with a velvety appearance. The colours are numerous: pink, carmine red, brown, black, violet, orange, coral...

The Bear's Ear Primroses prefer a shaded position but will tolerate a sunny location as long as the soil is rich and moist. Their small size allows for multiple uses: planted in groups, they work wonders in shaded beds and rockeries, in smaller numbers they can be planted in pots or containers, provided there is excellent drainage and regular watering, where they will show off their astonishing colours.

Planting and care

The bear's ear primroses are planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible upon receipt, in September-October or in March-April. If the intended location is not yet ready or if the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can grow them in plug plants for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, ensure proper drainage at the bottom of the container. Use a good potting soil for flowering plants (such as geranium potting soil) enriched with garden soil and slow-release fertiliser, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug plant should be level with the potting soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater, as this can be fatal to the plant as much as underwatering! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Avoid watering the rosettes of this variety with downy foliage to avoid damaging it. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week in the watering can. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden, in partial shade, in moist well-drained soil. Clumps can be divided in spring or autumn, after flowering.
