Sempervivum Chick Charm Giants Gold Mine - Houseleek

Sempervivum ‘Gold Mine’ is a spectacular variety from the Chick Charms® Giants collection, an XXL version of the houseleek 'Gold Nugget' with changing colours. This perennial plant forms very large evergreen rosettes that can reach 30 cm in diameter. Its hues range from golden yellow to anise green to brick red in cold weather. Resembling a colourful pineapple, this succulent is truly unique. Hardy, drought-resistant, it is easy to grow, both in rock gardens and in pots.

Sempervivum ‘Gold Mine’ belongs to the botanical family Crassulaceae. This cultivar is part of the Chick Charms® Giants series, created by Chris Hansen (Garden Solutions) in 2022. It is a hybrid involving Sempervivum ‘Gold Nugget’ as the main parent.
Native to mountainous regions of central and southern Europe — such as the Alps and the Iberian Peninsula — wild houseleeks grow spontaneously on rocky, well-drained soils, up to about 2,500 m altitude. Through hybridisation, they have produced numerous cultivars that appreciate the same growing conditions: sun and a rocky, poor, well-drained soil.
Houseleek 'Gold Mine' is a perennial succulent plant with evergreen foliage. It develops wide rosettes that can reach 25 to 30 cm in diameter, with a height of 12 to 18 cm. Its growth is moderate in spring and summer. The plant will fill a 4L pot in one to two years. Each plant produces daughter rosettes connected by stolons that quickly form a dense colony. At the centre of each mature rosette, a flower stem appears in summer (July‑August), bearing small star-shaped flowers in pink to rosy red. This flowering induces the natural death of the mother rosette, which will be replaced by its daughters. The leaves of this variety are thin, elongated, shiny, with a pointed tip. Their colour evolves depending on the age of the rosette and over the seasons. Initially bright golden yellow, they turn anise green in spring, then brick red that intensifies with the first frosts. The central leaves are erect, while the peripheral leaves gradually become trailing.
