Description

Tiarella cordifolia Moorgrun is a rhizomatous perennial that quickly spreads to form a carpet of light green leaves, very tender and adorned with numerous clusters of cream-white flowers from April to July.

The rhizomes of this lovely heart-leaved foam flower produce persistent, fuzzy, oval, palmate, green leaves tinged with bronze in autumn. In April, stems rise above the foliage to bear clusters of creamy-white star-shaped flowers, very delicate, airy, and abundant.

Tiarella cordifolia Moorgrun prefers a damp, humus-rich, well-drained and shaded soil. Add compost at planting and mulch the soil to retain moisture. Some stagnant moisture is tolerated in summer but not in winter.

Tiarella cordifolia Moorgrun is ideal under trees, in borders or shaded slopes, accompanied by Hostas, Ferns, Rodgersia pinnata or other foamflowers like Pink Skyrocket.

Tips: Remove faded flowers and limit the growth of rhizomes, which can be invasive.

Planting and care

Tiarella cordifolia Moorgrun is easy to grow. Plant it between September and April in a 20cm (8in) deep, well-drained, humus-rich but moisture-retaining soil. Add compost during planting, mulch to retain moisture, and monitor watering in summer. In clay soil, add coarse sand to lighten the substrate. Avoid winter moisture! Fertiliser is unnecessary. Divide old clumps after flowering. Beware of slugs!
