A very vigorous and disease-resistant climbing rose, it offers a truly remarkable flowering in May-June. Its small semi-double flowers, 3 cm (1in) in size and cup-shaped, are gathered in beautiful clusters that exude a unique fragrance, both musky and spicy, reminiscent of cloves. They offer pollinating insects a lovely cluster of yellow stamens. Its foliage is a beautiful light green and very vibrant. After the flowers, decorative small red-orange fruits appear between late summer and early winter.

Description

Rose Bobbie James is a vigorous climbing rose whose white flowering is truly spectacular in spring. It is covered with a multitude of small semi-double roses gathered in massive clusters that emit a surprising, but pleasant clove fragrance. After flowering, the plant remains pleasant to look at with its beautiful light green foliage that is slightly glossy and does not stain. Later, the orange-red fruits, which are also decorative, will attract birds' in autumn.

This climbing rose Bobbie James is a hybrid of Rosa multiflora, a botanical rose mainly used as a rootstock for other varieties. It was awarded in 1993 by the Royal Horticultural Society in England for its ornamental qualities and performance in the garden. It is particularly vigorous and disease-resistant, with very rapid growth, reaching up to 8m (26ft) in height and 6m (20ft) in width. This variety requires little or no support, as its long, slender branches, adorned with curved thorns, cling to a support on their own. This rose also does not require pruning. It flowers abundantly in May-June, earlier or later depending on the climate, on the previous year's branches. Its 3-4cm (1-2in) diameter flowers consist of 5 to 8 white petals forming a cup around a bouquet of well-exposed golden stamens for pollinators. They are gathered in clusters of 20 to 40 and almost hide the foliage. The flowering is highly fragrant, with a powerful spicy scent. The leaves of this rose consist of 5 or 7 serrated leaflets of a light green colour with red hues. This rose has a pleasant wild nature, further accentuated in autumn by clusters of small orange-red fruits. 'Bobbie James' prefers partial shade. Its only requirement for vertical growth is a sufficiently rich and deep soil.

Climbing rose Bobbie James needs a sufficiently strong support to sustain the weight of its vegetation. For example, let it run on a pergola, climb a wall, or let it conquer an old tree. Since its flowering does not last very long, it can be paired with a vigorous clematis with a staggered or simultaneous flowering: for example 'The President', Clematis terniflora, Clematis montana...

Planting and care

The rose Bobbie James prefers sunny locations or lightly shaded locations, especially in our sunniest regions. They are tolerant but do not like excessive limestone. It will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, deep, and rich enough.  To plant your rose, prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water abundantly after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth. Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest level), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning is done at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly in late summer, but it is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.
