Description

Rosa x Rugosa Pompon Perfume, also known as the peony rose, is a vigorous, perpetual shrub that stands out for its double flowers with a musky scent reminiscent of Japanese peonies. Their intense colour attracts attention and their heart filled with small petals and stamens is loved by bees. This offspring of rugosa rose also offers decorative hips and golden autumn foliage. The plant is also very hardy and resistant to rose diseases.

Rosa x rugosa Pompon Perfume 'Delarosa' is also known as Souvenir De Trélazé. It is a spontaneous seedling selected in France by Delaunay in 2010. It forms a beautiful, very bushy and upright shrub reaching about 1.50 m in all directions. The branches of this rose are very prickly. The abundant and disease-resistant deciduous foliage is composed of bright green leaves divided into 7 to 9 elongated, pointed, embossed, glossy leaflets, bordered by rounded teeth. In autumn, it takes on golden tones before falling. Its beautiful 8 cm diameter, slightly drooping flowers have a corolla of intense reddish-purple petals and a heart filled with tiny mauve petals and yellow and white stamens. They are highly scented. The abundant flowering begins in May-June and is renewed in waves until October, or even November if the weather permits. After pollination, rounded, slightly flattened, fleshy hips form, turning orange when ripe. They remain on the shrub for a long time enhancing its charm at the end of the season. These edible fruits can also be used to make jams or jellies and are loved by birds.

The Pompom Perfume rose is an original shrub. It is very hardy and low-maintenance and adapts to many regions, but its flowering will wane in the height of summer if the soil is very dry. It charmingly animates the garden for a good part of the year. It will find its place in a not very tall hedge or in a large shrub bed. To accompany it, consider, for example, bushy rugosa roses such as 'Blanc double de Coubert' or Thérèse Bugnet'. You can also associate it with a graceful and undemanding dwarf buddleia Nanho Purple, or with the Compact Winged Spindle, magnificent in autumn, or even with Nandina Obsessed Seika.

Planting and care

The 'Souvenir de Trélazé' Pompom Perfume rose is very resistant to harsh winters and tolerant of the soil. This variety is immune to rose diseases. It adapts to any well-prepared soil, enriched with compost, not too dry in spring and summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. To keep a bushy habit, prune after winter, every 2 years to remove the oldest branches (2-3 years old). This very hardy rose can withstand temperatures as low as -25°C. It may be useful to remove dead wood in winter. Prune lightly in spring if needed, after the risk of frost.

To plant your rose, in a pot or in the ground, work the soil to a depth of 30 cm, crumbling it well and adding a base fertiliser such as dried blood or dehydrated horn. Remove from its pot and position your plant, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm of soil, fill in and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, regular watering is necessary for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Mulch in summer to conserve water. Provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.
