Description

The English Rose, 'The Poet's Wife', is one of the first yellow varieties created by the rose breeder David Austin, but it remains a reference due to the deep fragrance of its roses. Their charming form combines a regular crown of outer petals with a more ruffled heart, and the roses are enhanced by dark and glossy foliage. The low and naturally rounded growth and excellent ability to repeat flower make this variety a truly classy rose, perfect for placing at the front of a border.

With a rather upright habit, this bush reaches a height of 1.25m (4ft) and a spread of about 1m (3ft), with fast growth that allows it to be fully established in 3 years. Its roses are produced abundantly from May to June and then regularly until October. The wide 6cm (2in) double flowers are a true and intense yellow and have a remarkable fragrance. Their scent initially reveals powerful lemony notes and becomes sweeter as it intensifies with blooming.  Its stems are adorned with fine foliage, dark green and glossy, very elegant. It is disease-resistant.

Combining the beauty of old roses with the advantages of modern roses, 'The Poet's Wife' or 'Auswhirl' rose captures light in the way only English yellows can and brings a touch of brightness to borders and the front of perennial beds with its sunny flowers and intoxicating fragrance. It will be beautifully showcased in front of a boxwood or yew hedge or, alternatively, surrounded by a miniature hedge or a carefully arranged maze, as seen in Italian or French gardens. If you have enough space, English, Old, or Shrub Roses are stunning when planted in groups of three. They will grow together to form 'one' opulent bush that will flower even more generously.

English Roses are well known for being highly repeat flowering, and their flowers are renowned for being beautiful, well-formed and highly fragrant.

Bred by David Austin in 2014.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose 'The Poet's Wife' in a sunny or lightly shaded area. English roses are tolerant to different soil types but do not thrive in soil with excessive limestone. These roses can grow in any garden if the soil is well-worked, not too heavy, and rich enough. To plant your rose, crumble the soil and add an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, to the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to remove any pockets of air, and regularly for the first few weeks to help with rooting.

Pruning English roses is essential for better flowering. At the end of winter, in February-March, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant look. While pruning, remove any dead wood and unsightly branches. Make sure to prune at a slant above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.

Roses often have stains or may look unsightly towards the end of summer. However, this is not a problem for their development. These stains are natural and do not harm the rose.

Pruning instructions Pruning is crucial for English roses to bloom. You can also remove any dead wood and unsightly branches during this pruning. Remember to make a slant cut above a bud. As the flowers bloom, removing the faded flowers is essential, as it stimulates the development of other buds.
