Description

The Rose 'Red Leonardo Da Vinci' is a very beautiful dark red flowering form of 'Leonardo Da Vinci'. Modern in style, but possessing all the qualities of old roses, it has a wonderfully romantic charm. Throughout the summer, until October, this small bush tirelessly produces generous bouquets of very double, tightly packed roses, shaped in quarters, of a deep garnet red and velvety, pleasantly fragrant. It is a floribunda with healthy foliage and resistant to bad weather, undisturbed by rain. It is at ease in all gardens. Without a doubt, it is a safe bet that will bring joy to many gardeners and especially to lovers of red roses.

The Rosa x floribunda 'Red Leonardo Da Vinci' 'Meiangele' is part of the masterpieces created by the rose breeder Meilland, obtained in 2005. Floribundas are cultivars with bouquet-like flowers, obtained by hybridizing polyantha roses and tea roses. 'Red Leonardo Da Vinci' forms a small bush of 70 to 85 cm all around, very branched, vigorous but flexible and covered with very healthy, slightly glossy, dark green foliage. Its flowering is remarkably long, lasting 5 to 6 month. This bush renews its very double corollas of 7-8 cm (3in) in diameter, gathered in terminal bouquets, in successive waves throughout the summer. The tightly packed buds open into round and turbinate flowers, then give rise to roses with a slightly more relaxed appearance and a pleasant fragrance. The exact shade of the flowers is a deep garnet red, deep and perfectly uniform.

Floribunda roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges, planted mixed at the edge of the terrace or in beds of small-sized shrubs. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris for example. They are good companions for panicle phlox and tall baby's breath. The modest size of 'Red Leonardo Da Vinci' makes it an interesting variety for growing in large pots.

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
