The 'Bolshoï' Rose is a modern tea hybrid rose that stands out for its large, vibrant, two-tone flowers, brilliantly edged in currant red on a yellow background, and its intense scent of May rose. The flowers bloom abundantly and continuously from summer to autumn on a vigorous and compact bush dressed in semi-matte green foliage, highly resistant to diseases. A generous, robust, brilliant rose, perfect for adding colour and fragrance to flowerbeds and balconies or terraces, planted in a beautiful container. Enjoy the scent and the long-lasting flowers in a vase as well!
'Bolshoï' or 'Meizuzes' is a modern bush rose with large flowers obtained by Meilland in 1997. This excellent variety was awarded the Gold Medal in Rome in 1996, the Gold Medal, and the Perfume Prize in Belgium at Le Roeulx in the same year. This dense, bushy shrub reaches about 75 cm (30in) in height and 50 cm (20in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces robust, thorny and well-branched branches, reddish when young. They bear exquisite foliage, bronze at the beginning, turning to semi-matte green, highly resistant to diseases. Throughout the summer and well into the season, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces large 13 cm (5in) diameter flowers, with a typical turbinate shape opening to a very tight heart, typical of tea hybrid roses. They are composed of 45 red-pink petals with a yellow base and the exact bright yellow reverse, a colour that stands out and is vibrant without being too loud. They are solitary and borne at the end of long shoots of the year or emerging on 2-year-old stems. The well-remontant flowering is characterised by a pronounced scent of rose with lemony notes.
With its vibrant colour and intense fragrance, this Bolshoï' rose stands out in the garden and is sometimes noticed by its scented fragrance before being spotted in a flowerbed. It deserves a place not far from the house or a pathway. Delicate and wildflowers like camomiles, white love-in-a-mist or Cuphea hyssopifolia can add an airy touch to this bush, as well as white groundcover roses (Swany) and certain grasses such as crested wheatgrass or Pennisetum setaceum, for example. Purple-leaved heucheras also provide a beautiful backdrop for its roses, as do lavender and catmints. It will look stunning as a solitary plant, for instance, in groups of 3 and a large pot on your patio or balcony. Its flowers make beautiful romantic bouquets alongside peonies and white lilacs.

Botanical data
To plant your 'Bolshoï' rose, choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.
Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:
1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.
2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.
3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.
When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.
Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
