The 'Grande Amore' rose is the rose of love, the one that is offered in a bouquet to declare one's love. This variety is a star among modern red hybrid teas, known for its colour depth and exceptional disease resistance. At the end of a long stem, a beautiful, fully double rose blooms with petals that are coloured in the most romantic shade of red and slightly fragrant. The flowering is continuous from June to October. This well-branched and bushy rose requires no treatment. It is taller than wide, so don't hesitate to plant it close together in a mass planting.
Â
Grande Amore (KORcoluma), sometimes sold under 'My Valentine', is a variety bred by Kordes in 2004 and has held the demanding ADR label since 2005. This German rose breeder is renowned for their floriferous creations that are resistant to diseases. The roses bred by this company are often awarded at national and international levels. 'Grande Amore' has received 5 awards, including the Gold Medal in Lyon in 2005 and the Rose Hills International, and was the Winner of the International Gold Certificate at the Portland International Rose Garden in 2012.
It belongs to the modern hybrid tea roses. It quickly forms an upright 80 cm (32in) tall bush with a 40 cm (16in) spread and is very repeat flowering. Its flowers open from pointed buds of dark red colour. They are double, beautifully turbinated, 10 cm (4in) wide, and are long-lasting in a vase. The petals are unquestionably deep red and velvety, slightly turned outwards. The thorny and very strong branches carry abundant foliage, which is dark red when young and becomes slightly glossy dark green. Its resistance to rose diseases (Marsonia and powdery mildew) is excellent. The foliage of this rose is deciduous; it falls in autumn.
Â
With its passionate red flowering, this bush rose 'Grande Amore' deserves an equally graceful setting and a place not far from the house. Some light-flowering perennial plants (autumn asters, foxgloves, penstemons), 'Powis Castle' wormwood, and grasses are ideal for enhancing its beauty and accompanying it late in the season. For example, combine it with Geranium Pink Cloud, Geranium grandiflorum, Panicum, Nepeta Walker's Low, and Campanulas. It will look good as a standalone plant and in a large pot on your terrace or balcony. Its flowers make beautiful romantic bouquets, along with peonies and lilacs.
Bred by Kordes in 2004, ADR 2005.
* (ADR: Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung, examination that rewards natural beauty, ease of maintenance, regularity, and disease resistance without any treatment or amendment, extremely rigorous criteria, very difficult to obtain)

Botanical data
Plant your 'Grande Amore' rose in a sunny location with well-worked, rich soil. Avoid using too much limestone. Add blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole to amend the soil. Water generously after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish. Pruning bush roses is not always necessary but can be done after 1 or 2 years when the rose is vigorous. Shorten branches to two or three buds above the ground in late winter. Choose an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Remove dead wood and unsightly branches while pruning. Remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.
Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
