Thanks to Anne Flore from the order preparation department and V.L. from the shipping department, the rose bush I received appears to be healthy. Planted near the 'Grande Classe' variety, I am now looking forward to seeing its progress... (will it take root or not?).

Description

The 'Hacienda' Rose is a modern hybrid tea rose whose French name is an anthem to heat and sunshine and whose English name, 'Firefighter', sounds like a vibrant tribute to firefighters. It undoubtedly owes this to its large, sumptuous roses, woven with deep red satin, shaped in a perfumed whirlwind that captures a heavy fragrance of May rose. They are double, heavy with petals, in large open cups and of an unchanging colour under the sun. Awarded several times in major international competitions for its fragrance, 'Hacienda' is also a vigorous and floriferous bush, repeat flowering, adorned with beautiful shiny dark foliage that beautifully enhances its red roses. Remarkable in the garden, they are exceptional in a vase!

'Hacienda' or 'ORAdal' is a modern bush rose with large flowers obtained by Joseph Orard before 1998 by crossing the famous Grand Huit (Commandant Cousteau) with the Hidalgo rose.  This exceptional variety has an impressive list of awards, including 6 awards for its fragrance obtained in Rome, Geneva, Saverne, Monza, Madrid and even California.

It is a bush with vigorous vegetation and a bushy and erect habit, which reaches about 1m (3ft) in height and 80-90cm (32-35in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces strong, thorny and well-branched branches, which bear elegant foliage, purple and shiny at bud burst, dark green and disease-resistant if the growing conditions are adequate. All summer and well into the season, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces large flowers with a diameter of 12cm (5in), whose turbinate shape is typical of hybrid tea roses. They are composed of 35 to 40 petals fringed at the edge, arranged in a deep, velvety red spiral, and open to a very tight heart. They are solitary and borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging on 2-year-old stems. The repeated flowering is distinguished by a heavy fragrance of rose.

'Hacienda' is simply a magnificent, blooming and warm rose, to be highlighted as a standalone or planted in groups of 3 plants not far from the house or near the terrace, even in a small garden, to enjoy its exceptional fragrance. It adapts to all regions, provided its planting is done properly. It is incomparable for giving a slightly theatrical touch to flower beds and goes well with the mauve roses of 'Blue Girl', 'Sissi', or the white corollas of the English rose 'Winchester Cathedral'. It is an ideal companion for flowering shrubs (buddleias, mock oranges, lilacs, hibiscus) and perennials such as bellflowers and foxgloves, adding a great charm. Its flowers, ignited by ardour, compose exquisite bouquets for loved ones.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
